Question Alternator/VR problem

I driven my 911 about 6,000 miles this year. It's been a blast but now it's time for some maintenance: clutch cable, fuel pump, alternator/vr, valve adjust.

About the probem: My car stalled a couple of times when pulling up to a stop. RPMs blipped down once to 500 and then 0. It started right back up, no problem.

I noticed the voltmeter reading barely over 12VDC at idle with some accessories on. After RPMs increase I read ~14.5VDC. One day last week I noticed the reading change once between the 2 numbers at idle directly after startup.

I let the car warmup in the driveway this morning; had the parking lights on. For the first time I noticed the lights pulsating. I may be done driving for the year with this and the other pending maintenance to be done.

I have had the alt rebuilt and replaced the vr a few years ago. I'll have to pull the alt first thing, no matter what but should I buy a new alt or get it rebuilt again?

Thanks, jt

I had this same problem a few months back. I took my voltage regulator out(internal regulator) and saw the brushes were worn down significantly. When I put in a new vr the problem was history. I think you may have the same problem because of your intermittent charging. Sometimes the brushes are making contact and sometime they aren't.

Thanks for your reply aadrew. I concur with the voltage regulator diagnosis. The alternator appears to be charging ok. Usually when it's not you will know it pretty quickly. No warning lights are present either.
$60 isn't too bad for a new VR. I just wish it was easier to get to.

You can take the alternator out in 15 minutes. I had to take mine out about 10 times at least. First time took 2 hours, then 45 minutes, then 15 or less.

I agree its the VR. Buy one with a lifetime warranty

I had my alternator out, geez, maybe 7 years ago. Got it rebuilt and put a new vr in at the same time. Got it out in maybe 2 hours or so. No too bad a job, just not much space.
Where do I get a VR with lifetime warranty; here @Pelican?
