Well, at least they still build the engine by hand. That's still got to count for something.

Of course, I also like the knowledge that my car was hand-crafted.

Yeah, Just like that "ugly" girl in high school that no one would ever admit to "doing it" with, yet if the truth were known.....

Nobody'd turn the new ones down!

think about how costly it would be to build a 911 "by hand" today -- they'd be completely unaffordable

hand-crafted is a misnomer anyway - only the 356 was truly hand-crafted

More "hand crafting" at Porsche would cut into their stellar profit margin. . .

They were still hand assembled at least. A real sight to watch the guys going over the cars with their white cotton gloves to catch any imperfections.

Wow...the Porsche factory reminds me of the BMW factory I visited in Spartanburg, SC last Christmas. While not as cool as hand assembly, the huge robots working in harmony and precision is quite amazing as well. It's much more cool in person than on TV...huge sections of car are swung around so fast, and the robots dance together as they do their work.

When did Porsche switch over to mostly robotic assembly? I always thought the '89 964 Carrera4 was the first model on the new automated robotic assembly line , but the 996 probably took it to a higher level.

I like to think that my 993 was built by the last of the old-school craftsmen, but I suspect that robots had a big hand in building it.

hand assembly is a good phrase, I agree - they still do a lot of checking by hand

the big change was after they called in the consultants to Toyota for help in avoiding bankruptcy, so I suppose it was then (Boxster & 996)

How do you get that? They talk about scanning the leather for flaws.

Hand built is better?

C'mon people, Man uses tools. A robot welder is just a tool. ...a highly developed one at that.
Build and Set-up for that tool can be great or crap . . .Porsche or Kia.
