Pacific Designs chain tensioners

The 2.4 MFI motor I have for sale has a set of these installed. Has anyone heard of these? Have any info?

Thanks

I have a set and could post pics later. It's really meant as a installation tool (cam/chain set up) and it's use is frowned upon by many.
That said there is a very high end restorer I know who said he puts them in every engine he builds. He said to me they all (tensioner's) suck.

Are these just mechanical tensioners? A thick aluminum block, with mounting holes in appropriate places, and with a bolt and lock nut which presses against the idler arm to do one time adjustment?

If so, in general I've not heard anyone say they are a good idea. By definition, they will provide the proper amount of tension only at one operating temperature. If that is set as hot, then there will be too much tension when starting up and warming up. If less than that, it will be too loose during normal running.

Sometimes pro racers have used them, on the theory that 1) parts in pro race motors get replaced frequently, so wear is not so much of an issue, and 2) the disadvantages of having a tensioner fail during a race outweigh extra noise and wear.

Funny I replied to this thread not only because I have a set, but more because I just got an engine for my 914 and I'm researching it.

I just open my covers today and looky what I see.
