alternator-housing

Need help! I have taken the alternator / fan out of my '85 3.2L engine but can not get the alternator separated from the housing. I followed the tech article and lightly tapped on the 5 or 6 bolts but the alternator will not separate.

I have gone as far as tapping on the fan (inside housing) in hopes it would separate because I assumed the fan would be the hardest item to get off. Fortunately, or un-fortunate, the fan came off.

Anyone have tips to further try removing the alternator from the housing?

Put housing face down on two 2x4's Then use a piece of 2x4 across the alt screws and give it a good shot with a good sized hammer, it will come apart.

I wouldn't whack the screws, even with a 2x4 over them.

What I've done in the past, and it's the method recommended by John Walker, is to stand a couple of 2x4s on the 2" side (so the 4" side is up). Then put some towels or rags down between the 2x4s. Space the 2x4s so they're wider than the alternator, but not as wide as the entire housing. Turn the housing so the alternator is facing down, and whack the entire housing on the 2x4s. After one or two blows, the alternator will drop out of the housing without damaging the screws.

YMMV. Good luck!

+1 definitely on the John Walker method that scottb mentions. strange but true.
You run the risk of damaging the bolts - this way lets gravity work with you. (BTDT)

Drop it down with a solid wack against the 2, 2x4s and the alternator will drop out. It might not work the first time but several solid wacks will get it.

Thanks for everyone's input. I tired the Walker method but it didn't come out so then I heated the housing with a propane torch (warm to touch) and hit the housing face against 2x4's and it came right apart. Off to fixing the bolts now...

Next question, even though the alternator worked good, since it is out of the car I was going to have it tested. Is there any recommendations on any parts to replace since it is out? I just don't want to find I damaged something and go through the process again.

I would recommend replacing the voltage regulator while its out, this what went bad on my 85.
