Jump starting the 911 story...
OK, this did not happen to me, but it is an interesting story that happened to someone I know who will remain nameless.
Car: Porsche late 911 say 95-98 vintage. Scenario: 911 has very dead battery needs a jump. The jumper cables were installed on helper car a to jump the 911 correctly. Cables to the 911 reversed pos to neg and neg to pos. how long they were connected is not known, I doubt very long. ![]() What damage could have occurred ? The dealer claims it needs an entire wiring harness. Over 10 grand in damage. plus labor. Sounds fishy to me.... ![]() Opinions...

I did it once to an '83 SC (I blamed the wine, but I was just in a hurry). It fried the alternator...and that was it. I have read on here that it could be more serious...

Run from that dealer - wiring harness should be fine. First check fuses - they're designed to protect your car. I'd worry about the alternator mostly the regulator and possibly the computer. Good luck.

I would hate to be in that situation.
And you're probably not asking about it here because the car runs fine. The electronics screwed up in a late model Porsche could probably approach that figure.

While I generally support the dealer, I recently had my 96 993 in the dealer for an idle problem. They could not find the problem for two days, and then told us they would need to replace two different parts that would cost me about $5K, and could not guarantee it would fix the problem. I picked up the car and took it to an independent- turns out the plug wires were bad.
My point is the dealer is not always (ever?) the best option, they don't look for the inexpensive fix, and if you can find a qualified independent, I would pick up the car and take it there- at least for a second opinion.

I doubt the harness is bad but the ECM probably is they don't like reverse polarity. The dealer is good for warranty work were they can throw parts at it till it is fixed but after a car is five years old it is time to find a good independent shop!!
