915 gear oil capacity and what kind of a pump to get it in?

I've replaced the shifter bushings on my 78 SC with 915 trans. Now I want to change to Swepco 201 and see if that helps, too. How much should I need? And what kind of a hand pump thingey should I use to get it in?

It look like someone put regular bolt heads in the trans instead of the 17mm allens. But I don't know if they are magnetic until I take them out. I might just get some mag ones from Pelican, too..

It shifts well when warm, but when cold it is reluctant to slide easily into second.
Could it be the dreaded first to second synchro? If so, I'll just live with it for awhile and just man-up and drive it.

Your fill and drain plugs (19mm) are correct for your year car.

Capacity = approx. 3 liters

Pump? Try Pep Boys or AutoZone, they should have something that'll work.

When you fill the trans have it level (horizontal) and add oil until it runs out of the fill plug.

FYI: DO NOT USE synthetic gear oil as a replacement!

i just did this exact thing. i too have some resistance when going into second gear. i used Valvoline 80W-90 Durablend synthetic gear oil and with a full drain it took a little bit over 3 quarts to refill. while draining out the old fluid i found that the po had used plain old mtl fluid. if i had to guess i would say that 7 out of 10 shifts before the change were hard to get into second and now it is more like 1-2 out of 10 once warmed up.

for filling my mechanic had something that resembled a hand-operated grease pump. it was hollow and had about 12" of tubing attached to the non-handle side. unscrew the hose/cap, fill with oil, close, push on the handle on the other end.

a little tip - make sure that you loosen the fill plug before the drain plug. experience has taught me that draining a tranny is pretty pointless if you can't fill it back up.

I use a plunger pump that screws directly on to the jug of Sweepco. Then just pump away! Be prepared, it really smells bad. The pump is plastic and is less than 5 bucks.

I just used a funnel and gravity.

Changing the Oil in an Early 911 Transmission

This is a better plan than mine.

Same thing I always do. The manual pump from an Autozone for just a few $$ works fine for 201 and even the heavier Swepco 210. Piece of cake and usually I don't spill a drop.

I recommend the pump from our host...it does the job alot better and easier than the stuff you get at the local parts store.

same here

every time I invest in a good pump the plunger seals dry out at time of 2nd use. Maybe not cleaning pump after use did it, but I speculate not?

201, in my opinion, is the only fluid to use.. I just changed mine and used a cheap bottle end tube I bought from Advance (cheap).. That should fix your shifting problem when cold, exception might be Wintertime in the North. As previously stated, DO NOT use synthetics in the Porsche trans.. It holds a bit less than a gallon. I think the spec is 3ltr.. Finish your level check on a level surface!!
