I understand Steve Wilkinson's reluctance, insurance companies are by and large designed to to collect premiums but not so much giving them back! That said, last time took a stance similar to Steve's on the 356 registry forum, I was taken to task by a guy with 40 year of experience in the insurance industry who challenged me to read the hargerty policy end to end and find something that prevents me from driving my classic wherever / whenever... his contention, having analyzed the document, was that the only thing they can truly ding you on is NOT having a daily driver / effectively using your classic as a daily driver, and/or Track days. It's not that hard to prove... Nowhere in there did it say you can't go eat out, you cannot go to a movie with it...

So I feel pretty comfortable doing what I do, which is generally w/e driving only and once or twice a month a "during the week" trip to work exercise the car. Thing is, if you have a life and truly limit yourself to club events, the poor car would rot !

I totally understand those like the former Mr Wilkinson who chose to err on the side of caution... But I've heard enough from the horse's mouth and other to live a little... we'll see...
It's not like I'm risking a 356 Carrera in my case ;-)

Tell you the truth, I actually do exactly the same thing with my SC--drive it locally, casually, maybe once every two weeks, and we do have two other cars for my wife and me. We both work at home, so there's no such thing as commuting ever involved, though I might well take the SC to the 20-miles-away RR station at 11 in the morning to go to Manhattan once every couple of months. It's just that I'm aware I'm taking a risk.

I went to Sneed, Hagerty and Grundy for insurance on my 89 911.

So far Sneed had the best rate, which included occasional trips to work.

I just completed the application for final approval.

Grundy Insurance

Grundy Insurance sent some forms to be signed. One of the forms states "It will not be used for back up transportation or for errands. It will not be driven to work or school or used for business or commercial purposes."

So am I covered if I wreck the vehicle going to work?

Do you have to ask ?

that is why most people use other companies with more lenient policies. Sneed or AMIG come to mind. Hagerty also told me in writing it was OK occasionally... But the above 2 have it specified a little more black and white than "occasionally"...

"Do you have to ask?"

Exactly. "It will not be driven to work" = No you're not covered if you wreck the vehicle going to work. Duh.

I'm covered by Hagerty. Just for the fun of it, I got on-line quotes yesterday from Hagerty, Sneed, Leland West and Grundy. They were $530, $557, $650 and $240 respectively.

You obviously get what you pay for, since there's no way Grundy has survived for 50 years by being as generous as the other companies.

I'm always amused by the TV commercials showing how much cheaper Progressive is than anybody else, for conventional car insurance. Do you want the cheapest insurance, or do you want the best insurance? I insure our other cars, and our home, with The Travelers, which I know perfectly well isn't the cheapest.

Sneed was within $100 of the others and it allows occasional driving to work.

I am insured by Hagerty and 2 weeks ago today at just about 9AM I went for a ride and a rock hit my windshield. I got home and called them, they told me no problem call whoever I want to have it fixed give them the claim number and their number to call.
I called my local Porsche guy to find out who can install a 911 windshield and do it right. The people I called contacted Hagerty then returned a call to me and told me I was getting a new windshield, new gasket and new chrome trim.
The adjuster contacted me asked me a couple of questions and told me that he talked with the glass guys and they felt it was better to start with all components new. He sent me the check for $568 and told me to pay them when I was satisfied with the job.

Pretty easy and no hassle. Not a question popped up about where I was going, the time of day or penny pinching on the cost. The adjuster did assure me that Hagerty does not charge any surcharge on renewal for glass claims.

Does Sneed or Hagerty take into account driving record?

I have not had a claim in well over 10 years but have several point on my license for speeding.

I once switched to USAA and they covered me for a month then canceled me because of my driving record. It turned into a hassel going back to my original insurance company, StateFarm. Incedentally, StateFarm does not care about points, they only ding you if there are claims.

I worry sometimes as to what I would get if my car was totaled. I suspect a lot less than replacement value.

"I worry sometimes as to what I would get if my car was totaled. I suspect a lot less than replacement value."

You can easily get an agreed-value policy. You tell _them_ what you declare your car to be worth, which may have nothing to do with "replacement" or blue-book value, and that, supposedly is what they pay you if it's totaled. My '83 SC, for example, is insured with Hagerty for an agreed value of $30,000, which in fact is way less than I have in it.

Of course the higher the declared value, the higher the premium.

Just thought I'd post a short postscript to this thread. After doing a lot of research and speaking to all of the usual classic car insurance suspects, I decided to go with Sneed to insure my 993. The policy has an agreed value of $35K, allows me to drive the car 3000 miles a year, and contains this statement under the allowed use of the vehicle: "Occasional Commuting to Work". The premium is $370 a year which turns out to be the lowest I received. Here's hoping that I never need to file a claim...

"Prove me wrong at your own risk." and etc..... Well, pfffttt! Many far more sensible things were written subsequent to that in this thread. No offense. Your due respect far and long precedes and outweighs your's truly.
But! It's always possible I suppose that a company might go belly up, but I prefer to believe they'd pay otherwise. I mean, come on, what's with the half empty glass stuff? Did you get bit once upon a time because you didn't have a policy covering you with all stipulations "in writing"? Sounds like you have a grudge of sorts, but no matter.
As I wrote before, my policy, now into it's second year with Sneed, has a rider that allows 2 days per week to work. I even document it, which ain't much, but as I said before, there are always witnesses about who would provide backup if necessary...and again, I don't see that need arising. Why have insurance at all if you don't think you'd be paid for a claim? Maybe we need insurance of our insurance.... ;)
So, 911cab, I think you made a good choice. Just get the rider in print, and signed.... :) Enjoy your ride....(s)...
Happy New Year, all, BTW...
