Hydraulic Chain Tensioners?

Hello,

beginner question: I just got my 1977 911. I was told that the chain tensioners have been updated.

How can I tell? Is there an easy way to check?

Thanks for answering that silly question!

Boris

Aux. oil lines visible at the left and right timing chain covers = Carrera tensioners! Each of those lines should have a support clamp/bracket - check to be sure those are there (I can't see them in your pics).

Looks fairly stock - hasn't been screwed up yet. 11 blade fan is good, air pump removed. What does your exhaust system look like?

+1 There are no auxilary oil lines visible in your picture which indicate the Carrera tensioners.

There is a bit of confusion sometimes--hydraulic tensioners are not necessarily Carrera pressure fed tensioners. You may well have hydraulic tensioners (probably do) which are notorious for failure. Pressure fed are more reliable and considered a safe upgrade, but are by no means "bullet proof." There is no real meaning to the phrase "updated tensioner" unless you know the starting and ending points. It doesn't look like you have the Carrera tensioner update, but I cannot clearly see the cam covers.

edit: Looking closer, Peter may be right. Post a clear shot of the face of the cam covers any we'll all be sure.

looks good. SSIs, turbo valve covers, tensioners. Looks like some new hardware on the case. Do you know if the engine was rebuilt?

I don't know. I do not think so. It only has 69000 miles on it...

So it is confirmed? Carrera Tensioners?

Thanks!

Yes, in the first picture of your last batch you have a picture of the chain housing. This is were the tensioner is located. The metal line running across the front of the chain housing and eventually into the chain housing in the oil line used to provide oil pressure to the tensioner.

How does the rest of the car look?

Those are some rare rims you've got there. By the looks of the SSIs, new oil return tubes and Carrera tensioners, I'd vote for rebuilt or at least re-sealed.
