Question For Mid Year Owners With DEALER Installed AC
I'm restoring a very low mile 1975 S that had dealer installed AC and have a question for anyone familiar with this setup.
When I turn on the fan switch on the dealer installed AC console, air blows in the cabin. This is the plastic duct system that mounted at the knee bolster area. BUT when I slide the FACTORY climate control system nothing happens. Was this factory blower system disabled? Does the factory climate control system work in conjunction with the dealer setup? Thanks

RNajarian,
I think you are seeing the lack of integration between Dealer air and the Factory fresh air system. Many have removed their Factory A/C systems to reduce weight. I’ll encourage you to buy some of those systems and convert your 911 to as if it was originally equipped with Factory A/C. This will integrate with your fresh air system. The two systems A/C are not that different except for important features. Most important is the front mounted additional condenser and fan. Other are the integration into the fresh air system. There are also current ‘improvements’. These add condensers, more efficient heat exchangers, improved evaporators and modern components. I’m a ‘lightweight’ advocate but I realize and appreciate the necessity for A/C in some climates and some uses. You can’t take a client to CC lunch in Houston in a non-A/C 911. If anyone restores a 911 with ‘Dealer’ air, they should convert to all the Factory pieces and more. I plan to build an SC or Carrera with better-than-Factory A/C as a ‘daily’. Just my humble opinion. Best, Grady

Thanks Grady. I've got the complete AC system out of my now departed '83 SC. I was going to use those components when I service my '75 S.
Hence the reason for my question. I suspect the dealer disabled the Factory climate control system. I have a front condenser in this system, right in passenger footwell, so as you can imagine there is some weirdness to the dealer installed system.

I have the dealer installed unit on my 75 Carrera. The original equipment heater and fan controls in my car are functional. The dealer installed system works independently and consists of a fan control (separate fan unit) and thermostat control for cold. I have kept mine intact as this is how she came in 1975. It is amazing how cheap and flimsy the ducting and vents are made on the dealer unit. I recently had the carpet changed and the interior guy strengthened and put new vinyl over the ducts. I looks great now and is very stable.
By the way, if anyone has an NOS unit from the dealer thats never been installed, Im interested!!!! Greg ------------------------------- 75 US Carrera 03 996 Cab 2 69 Camaro Z11 Pace Car |
