Would 23/30 torsion bars be way too stiff for a daily driver?

Hey all

I have an opportunity to get a set of torsion bars at a great price, but I'm concerned that they might be too aggressive for my purposes.

23 front and 30 rear is the set.

My daily commute consists of about 60% freeway (which I am betting I would love the stiffness on). And then I have to also deal with the really crappy streets of downtown san Francisco. At at stock stiffness, downtown is already harsh, but highway driving is a little soft.

I haven't gotten the car out to thetrack yet but I will be next year. Probable one event every couple months or so.

Sometimes on my return trip for work, I go for this great windy road excursion that takes about an hour and a half or a little longer. I'll also take that trip every couple weekends.

My driving style is aggressive. I used to race an a4 touring car professionally here in the states for a few years, so I really like a stiff suspension.

I have an 83 UrQuattro that I installed height adjustible coilovers on that work with the eibach ERS spring series. Stock spring rate on an urq is, if I remember correctly, 180 front 160 rear. I went with progressives front and rear with a range of (also hoping I remember correctly) 375-425 front and 340-375 rear. It's incredibly stiff, but I can tolerate it.

Thing is that I don't think I want to go THATfar with the 911. But I definitely want it stiffer. The sizes I was thinking of was 22 front and 28 rear.

Maybe going up one in the front and 2 in the back isn't so bad.

I suppose that if I just can't stand them then i could always get thesmaller set and sell them on here.

Oh, this is for an 81 targa that will be getting monoballs up front, turbo tie rods, triangulated strut brace, has carrera sway bars installed, and eventually polybronze all around.

Thanks in advance

Michael

Been there done that. First purchased my SC with 23/30 TB's and used it on the street for a while...it got played. Especially the front of the car. Felt more like the car was crashing over the pot holes.Went 21/28 with Bilstein Sports, later model Carrera sway bars and was a happy camper. The car was a whole lot more compliant and yet still stiff enough to have major fun on the back roads especially on a everyday basis. Your going to give up something on the track though. So its all about compromise and being truly honest about what your using your car for.

23/30 w stock SC sway bars is pretty close to 22/29 w Carrera's 22/21 sway bars which is a very popular combo. It is however about 10% stiffer in the front which is what you might notice the most.

It is however more a track combo that can be driven to the track. Especially w upgrade sway bars. Not so much a street combo that can be driven on the track.

It is a set up that is more safe and predictable & balanced toward getting the rear to stick in big sweepers than being an autoX set up where it might push some.

Your choice of street tires, staying with stock or modest size sways, keeping rubber bushings on the sway bars, and maybe a custom valved set of shocks might make it more usable.

Just my two cents.

I run 23/31 on my full race car (with BIG SR sways) and it's stiff. Looks like I may be going even stiffer this year though... Either way that's going to be a rough ride on anything but smooth roads. I'm putting 21/28 in my project car as it will be 90% street..

Michael,

23/30 is too stiff for daily street use, especially for a Targa. 22/28 is a better choice for what you are doing.

Don't overlook that your shocks match the spring rates, too.
