Ignition switch issues
Ok so can someone fill me in on the ignition switch issues? Mine went out last night so now im looking for a used one. Best thing to do? Prices? Any other suggestions? If its rebuild able, is it worth it? I did find one other thread on this issue but it was a little different.
Thanks! |
Sounds like you already did some searching, so you know that there are 2 parts to the ignition switch - an electrical part and a mechanical part. What are you having problems with?
When mine was having issues in the start position, I took the mechanical portion apart and found the start contact was badly worn. I also found that the factory had installed a couple of spare contacts - so I switched a spare to the start position. That was about 5 years ago, and the original 35 year old switch is still going strong. |
Mine was gummed up and was not disengaging from the start position - nice shot of WD 40 right into the key slot (have a rag underneath) now works great 2 years later

Yeah i understand that there are two. Im having an issue with the mechanical i believe. Turned the ignition on and then turned the key back but the power still remains on. I have had an issue with the switch before where you turn it to start the car but it locks up before engaging the starting position. So i wasnt too surprised when it happened. But now im just reaching under the dash and disconnecting the plug to kill it.

it kinda feels like something broke loose because it turns really loosely now

$635 for a new switch....if it were mine, I'd take it apart and attempt to fix it.

Yeah ill pull it apart and see if i can figure out whats wrong. I saw that on pelican for the new switch. I hoping to just find a used switch from one of these parts cars out here.

I had the small "cross" of pot metal that actually turns the electrical part break off, which gave me the same symptoms you have (turns too easily, won't turn off engine). Unfortunately, there is no way to fix that.
Used switches come up in for Sale regularly, you should be able to get one with keys for less than $120 total. |
Thanks Pazuzu!
