Post Quest for Cool, part three

Some incremental changes I grabbed pictures of today.

We removed the driver's side battery box, and there's fortunately still room for the Stinger battery and the charcoal cannister there. The only picture I have was when the camera wasn't still, but here it is:

This will allow airflow through the new bumper ducts, as well as the horn grills, without obstruction to the two fender mounted coolers. I cut the holes in the new fender myself. Eventually they'll have screens over the holes, and the whole thing will be black:

That's about as ugly as Black Beauty's ever been, huh?

The new headlight rings are getting painted at the same time, but the H4s are finally on:

At the track, they'll come out, and a removable panel in the back of the headlight ducts will allow even more air to get to the coolers:

Slowly but surely, it's all coming together.

Cool

God I wish I had control over my checkbook!!!!! It's not fair that you get to spend money on Black Beauty!! One of these days I'm gonna wig out and have someone slap another 100 ponies in my car then deal with the wife... The worse thing that could happen is I'd be divorced...

Man, Jack. Have you no heart? BB is being cut up to cool her temper, poor girl.

Hopefully the temps actually get down to what you would like them to be. Question though, how much cooling did the 964's have for that engine? It seems like you are having to do a hell of a lot more to cool the thing than it was originally.

I can't believe you let the girl get dirty as well. In the fourth picture, I like the smiley face created by the lights.

Hey Congrats Jack! So lucky, you...you've got two BBs! (Black....and a Blonde Beauty!) Two questions...how is that panel in the headlight bucket secured, and can you post before/after pictures of BB (the black one ) after its facelift?

Hello

Need to sort out that cable worms.

The additional wireloom can run behind the fueltankgap wher your pluscable was.

Still working on the AC ?

You can cut out nearly the complete light bucket just behind the 4 brakets with the thread hole. For driving use plastic cups to protect the rearside ( there had been some with snaped in behind the four lashes ) and do some improvments to the lashes where you fix the lights. I recomend a long tube with a nut on the end and using a longer bolt. The tube will guide the bolt to the threads and speed up everything and it works even in dark nights. Some rally cars had 356 like clamp rings.

Also do something to secure the lamp cableset when driving open.

Don´t rush, you will be the same after marriage and I think you take the Jaguar with a working AC and wispering engine for take off.
( Well the Porsche is so loud you will not hear the can´s )

Talking

Roland,
Can you explain a little bit more regarding the headlight bucket setup you mentioned? Sounds very interesting...do you have any pictures of how it may look like? If I'm not mistaken the Euro H4's don't use the 4 brackets/lashes(?) for mounting, well at least not mine. What is the purpose of the tube? What does it speed up...installation of the light? Thanks!

Question

Jack,

How did you mount the side brackets for your front spoiler if you've removed your battery boxes? Custom mount? No Mount at all, just front mounted?

I'm ask because thinking about "deleting" the battery boxes (welding sheet metal over the holes) and running a single optima/stinger in the smugglers box.

Thanks,
Charlie

Hope you're getting married in the morning - that way, if it doesn't work out, you'll be able to work on your car in the afternoon

Hello

Just imagen you go rallying with a 911 and the lights have to be changed at every service station as due to the high vibrations a failure is possible. Also the team should be able to change the bulb in deepest black night abroad. On some rallys they had complet spare lights.

The period tricks where to cut the rear from the bucket away and close it with a removable cup. So you could change the bulbs from the rear. I think the four lashes are made for the hold downs to fix that setup.
I had seen one 912 with that setup but it wasn´t a factory car. However the car was driven from Zasada and Bienert or Feustel made the prep.
Porsche used on the Safaris lamps with hold downs outside. I also had seen one car with 356 lamprings. They have a lash outside to hold the unit.

My setup looks very original. Just drill out the thread from the original fixing lash inside the bucket with 5mm ( if not gone allready ). Decamfer the front with a 60° angle drill. Then use a 10-15 mm long tube with the same inner diameter. Take a M4 nut and a long bolt and bolt it togehter. Noe soler the tube to the lash and the nut to the tube. If done some primering. The next step is to remove the original screw and replace it with a longer one. The M4 screws have lreger heads then normal. If you can´t find one then use a M5 screw and nut.

The thing will work very easy. Just place the light and the use the screw to find the hole. Everyone who did it knows that this is very hard if you have to search and turn. Now you search and press the screw inside the tube. It is fixed now and also the missaligmend from the thread is nearly immpossible.

Braketing can be done by using the screwhole in the headlightbucket.

Jack has allready supports for his oilcoolers.

Whoever can cut and weld the battery boxes can also fabricate a support rod.

As far I can remeber they never used to cut out the headlightbuckets for cooling reasons. Also the FIA doesn´t allow this for racing. You can remove the headlights but must cover the holes. I remeber Alfa used the headlight cutout for brake ducting in the 70´s and get a protest from BMW.

This is the reason why many cars have so much slots and wide open grills ( Delta Integrale, Mitsu Evo,......)

The best way for Jack would be to make some headlightcovers with steel mesh insert.

Racecars did use one large deep mountet front cooler and placed sometimes additional coolers for trany oil in the wheelweel.

Only the 934 ( gruppe 4 ) "Wasserwerk" had the watercooler in the middle and the oilcoolers outside but under the wings in the spoilerunit.

I think using the RS spoiler with the cooler cutout would run into the stealth look. making the power obvious.

As far Jack O will get his AC back to work he should think about geting a condensor in the wheelweel as the rear unit will not fit anymore.

Grüsse
