How long do you warm it up?

How long do you let your 911 warm up before driving it?

I don't. I drive it to warm it up. Keeping at 4000 rpm or so until I get to he first hash mark on my temp gauge give or take. When everything feels and smells right, I have at it.

I start it up, and if it has oil pressure, I drive it immediately. I don't go over 3500 until the oil temp gets past the first white hash mark on the gauge.

I don't. Its customary to drive off almost immediately. Maybe just a few seconds to let the fuel system stabilize and the whatever gadgets and gizmos on your particular model to adjust. It will come up to temperature quicker that way, and excessive idling never did any engine any good. Just refrain from high rpm/full load until up to normal operating temps.

I sort of rely on the throttle on my '73. I nurse it along after getting it out of the garage with the throttle at about 2K rpm and sense that everything is ok when I can put the throttle on the floor and it maintains engine rpms without a stall.

I do the same with my SC. Usually it hits temperature just in time for me to hit the on-ramp and redline it in 2nd.


Sadly, redlining in third would get me pulled over. Why can't I have fun?

I let mine idle for a couple of minutes before driving. I was curious as to what others were doing.

Drive away slow, only 3/8 throttle, shift at 3,000 rpms until ~160 degree oil temps.

This is the advice I have always been given, and have heard the same about BMW M engines. Keep revs low and throttle below half until warm, but idling isn't helping anything.

Idle for a minute, then drive away moderately, keeping it under 3K until the oil temp gets close to normal (first mark) . Then, let loose.

Wait to make sure the garage closes all the way, then go. I get a couple of drags in the first 1-2 minutes, then she's good to go. As others said, I start slowly, let her warm up while I drive safely through the neighborhood, then cut loose.

I find my carbs can be a bit more cranky depending the air temp. In the summer its start and go. In the winter it takes a bit more patience.

I warm mine up as long as I can considering the situation. I never load or rev cold engines. honestly, it's respect of your engine. imho cheers, g

Start 'er up. 1,600 revs for about 60 seconds. Drive off and don't go over 3,000 revs until the oil temp gauge is in the fully warmed up stage (single line) then I drive it in a lively manner but not going above 5,500 or 6,000.

Like everybody says, "no warm-up". I drive at not much more than 3000 RPM until the oil temperature gets well out of the white zone. I was told early on, in the 60's, it is bad for any engine. I never did it, especially even when staring on freezing winter days. I did the same with all my cars and they seem to reward me with long engine life.

How long do you warm it up?

Start it, back it up and wait for garage door to close, then drive it under 3200 rpms until it hits the first oil temp line. (Warmed up)

really?? sounds wrong on like 3 levels. first off, metals expand at different rates when heated. that was the reasoning behind divilar originally. this is an sc 3 liter that was being discussed. let it warm up. especially cis. your thermotyme won't shut off enrichment and you'll probably foul plugs. imho cheers, geoff

Long enough to put my seat belt on and make sure oil pressure's normal. 10 seconds. Then I follow the instructions in the manual...
