Steering Question

Three questions actually:

My steering wheel/column on my 77 911S coupe can be moved about 1/2 inch up and down and therefore feels loose. What causes this and how can it be corrected? There doesn't seem to be any play to either side though.

Also, how are the two plastic covers (upper and lower) behind the steering wheel attached? I removed the two small screws between then and saw no difference. Thanks!

A search will give you lots of info on this.
The plastic covers have more screws hidden under the steering wheel.

New guy, give him a break.

The wobble is a common problem.

This thread has all the information he needs:

problems arising with metal steering bushing

Glad to help.

Be sure you find the tiny screws on the sides of the clamshells as well.

You can also remove the tach housing and there are 2 nuts, vertical, that also hold and clamp the shaft - when I tighten these it always ends the up and down movement.

Thanks to you also Bob! This would be the easier of the solutions if it works on my car.

You probably need to replace the steering wheel bushing which is found by removing the steering wheel. The factory bushing finally turns to dust and the results are as you describe.

Our hosts carries a MDS (self lubricating) Nylon bushing that installs easily, will not rattle like the metal sleeve, is removal later if necessary and will last probably as long as you'll own the car.

Here's a thread for your review with some pictures of the bushing:

If you have any questions on the install just give me a PM and I'll help you.

Thanks Mitch! I'll keep that in mind when I tackle this problem.

Had the same symptom on my 87. Got the bushing, popped the horn cover and when I went to take the steering wheel off discovered the nut was slightly loose. Tightened steering wheel and it was fine. Still have the bushing when it inevitably will need replacing. OTOH I'm the only person I've seen admit that it was just the loose wheel nut.

EDIT: Oh yeah...if you want to check the actual two bolts holding the steering wheel column, the tach just pulls out of the hole. Preobably not your problem.

Good luck....oh yeah post some pics of your baby.

Thanks! My baby needs paint after 32 years, but it only has 40K miles on it. I have bought a lot of good stuff from fellow pelicans waiting to be installed. I always appreciate the good advice.
