73T - Preparation for 2.7 Carrera Engine Transplant

You may well have read my recent posts advising that I have managed to acquire a rusty but mechanically sound 1975 RHD Euro Carrera Targa, complete with the coveted type 911/83 2.7 210bhp engine. That car was transported to Francis Tuthills, where the engine transplant in to my 1973 911T is to take place.

However, before the transplant can take place, I agreed a job list with Tuthills that will see the appropriate level of refurb done to the engine bay and motor / gearbox before they get transplaned.

So to business, and firstly an apology as some of the photos are inside and came out rather dark.

The 73T engine and gearbox are removed and split, to be sold on to their respective new owners, leaving an empty and not too dirty engine bay.

The electrical panel is then removed, and the engine bay given a thorough degrease and satin black finish, along with the fitting of new superpro semi-solid mounts. The sound pad is left in place as it is original and in great condition.

In order to fit the 2.7 engine, we need to transplant across the oil pipes, thermostat and trombone cooler. the 73T did not have the necessary mounting tabs on the sills or in the inner wing, and so these were welded on and new fixings used for a snug and solid fit.

The wheel will be removed to allow better photos of the trombone cooler.

the pipes fitted at the back are temporary, as I had some new ones on the shelf :-)

The small black underseal overspray will also be removed.

Tuthills had cleaned the engine and gearbox and diagnosed where the main oil leaks were coming from, and a main culprit was the gearbox main seal (?) which was replaced. The gearbox was mounted to the cradle and the driveshaft attachment point removed and the ring and pinion removed to give access.

Everything is then cleaned up and the new seal fitted, plus other 'fettling' but the gearbox was not opened up as there was no need (or budget).

Everything torqued up and ready to be bolted to the engine.

I think back to when you first started and it looked like you were working on the car outside in your backyard. It's come a long way since then and is going to just get better with the addition of a Carrera engine...very cool.

Rich,

Yes I started work on the refurb in September 2008 just after I had finished the DDK Club tour in Wales. Seems ages ago, and I was indeed out on the front yard with the hydraulic lift.

car should be back with me by the end of the week, so I have the winter to do some fine detailing and a few odd jobs before using it in anger next year. However, there is a Track Day in early December I may go to, just to stretch it's legs :-)

superpro = Wevo blue?

I'd soak that Mg tranny case in Boeshield, Corrosion Block, Gibbs or something similar -- there are 3-4 products & I have no idea which is best

Yes Tuthills mentioned the gearbox case looked a little 'pickled' and they will be spraying it with something, but I didn't catch the name.
