A peek inside my door's inner workings

My passenger side door makes 2 horrible knocking sounds when opened. One at about 30 degrees, then the other closer to full open. The sound is accompanied by a visable 'popping" movement of the pin attachment where door is bolted to the body. I took the panel off today, and tried to get my camera is far up in there as possible. This is the picture that came of it. Obviously that little rubber-band looking piece is messed up, that can't be how it's suppose to look. Can anyone tell me from my rather vague description and from this picture what's going on with my door?

It is the door check and you need a new one. Not too expensive and fairly easy to install.

It does look like you need a new door stop, but the noise you hear may not be from the part you are showing. Look carefully at the arm that comes out of the door and attaches to the door post--you will see two distinct "bumps". These are the stops that slows the opening of the door as the bumps pass between the pinch rollers of the mechanism. Often the noise you describe is the friction of the bumps passing through the rollers and can be remedied by filing a bit off the bumps. Many have done just that to get rid of the noise and jolting of the arm that you mentioned.

Again, it looks likes you may need a new stop, but even new ones can make the noise you talk about.

Please post a picture of the door stop area with the door wide open.

The popping may be a problem with the door skin. The area where the door stay bolts into the door is weak and may be flexing. Pelican sells a door stay reinforcement kit to strengthen the door frame. It is two pieces of thick sheet metal with the right cutouts to sandwich the door and bolt the stay to the thicker metal of the reinforcement kit.

If the door stop pin is moving when you move the door, then it may be that the door stop pin is worn. Replace with a 6 mm bolt and nylock nut, tighten until noise stops.

Otherwise, as noted above, the metal around the door stay is failing. There is a repair piece for this as well.

Do a search for door stay to find the threads. John Walkers Workshop has the recommendation for the nut and bolt so you can verify the size.

That thread has all the info you need plus links to other threads about the door stay replacement. Great place to start.
