Shift light & starting issue

My car is an '88 Carrera. The constant nagging of the upshift light in the tach drives me nuts. What is the best way to disable that light - I'm looking for something more elegant than the piece of tape I have over it now.
Also, if I shut my engine off, say at a drive-through or something, it won't restart until I open and close the driver's door. What is that about? Someone suggested that it had something to do with the anti-theft system, but there is no alarm system in the car. Is this normal?

No idea about the starting issue, but you can pull out the clock to and push the tach out from behind.
Remove the black wire to disable the CASIS light.

Black wire, gotcha. I'm replacing the gauge bulbs tonight so I'll do it then. Thanks!
