Is gas different in Il compared to Ca?

Ever since I moved to il I get a once in a while backfire in the exhaust on my 72 mfi car. It's not a loud bang, just once in a while it happens on decel when it comes down to 2500 rpm's. I run 87 octane here and I ran the same in Ca. I use to run chevron gas in Ca, run that new shell gas here. So is it formulated differently here which would cause it to run richer, or is it just my cranky car? I'm thinking of trying some cheap gas, or maybe even moving up ocatane wise, but feel it might get worse?

Is your RPM transducer in working order?

No, and it hasn't been in 10 years or so, but I have only been here for 2 years and it started when I moved. Granted, it could be something else, but just wondering if it could be the gas?

To answer your initial question, yes, gas is formulated differently in Ca (stricter EPA rules)--resulting in higher price per gallon and lower mileage--but is that the cause of your problem? That is still an open question.

Yes, several differences.

First, we have winter and summer blends in IL, something CA doesn't have to worry about.
Second, all fuel in IL is 10% ethanol, a payoff to the Illinois corn lobby. Not sure about CA.
Third- we have insane taxes on fuel, which certainly causes me to choke every time I fill up, so perhaps the car is feeling the same way. But I'm sure CA taxes are just as bad.

The one good thing about IL is that we can get 93 octane fuel, something CA has deemed out of bounds for whatever insane reason. Heck I can even get 100 octane Sunoco at a few places.

Maybe I should stop getting that nitrogen enriched gas? I think I'm going to try a different station, and if I were to move to a higher octane, do you think it would get worse? I think I may have the old rpm transducer and the micro switch, but god only knows what box it is in and even if it works.

Just a shot in the dark, but if you were in San Diego or San Fran, you are now 600 ft higher in the atmosphere which means any pressures that were correct in Cali. could now be a bit off, such as air/fuel mixture.

Just my .02

I lived in marin county which is just accross the GG bridge, but not sure if this makes a dif as the MFI pump is supposed to correct for altitudes, or am I wrong?
