Oil level-related oil leak from engine?

Just got a (new to me) 911 that was running about mid-gauge oil level. Engine was wet, but didn't drip much. Added oil to bring gauge to the top, and it all leaked out (as the car sat) over 2 days. And it leaked out fairly fast. Then stopped. I've never seen this before, and I've had several dozen 911s. Suggestions of places to check?

One question first. When you mention "gauge", you mean the dip stick, right? I know from your many posts that you are familiar with 911's, but just checking. If the car has just sat for several days, the oil in the tank has probably settled back into the sump of the engine--liquid seeking the lowest level. If you don't see a mess on the floor, there is nowhere else for the oil to go. Try starting the engine, warming it up and checking the tank again. I'll bet it's at the correct level.

No, the oil level gauge -- with the car fully warmed and on a level surface was reading mid-gauge. I added about a quart, and about a quart leaked out. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

I think you need to check on the dip stick and compare withe the gauge reading. The gauge could be giving you a false reading and it may be leaking as it has been over filled.

Please don't rely on the oil level gauge. It's readings are marginally accurate at best, and virtually useless at the regarding the actually oil level. The best and really the only true way to check the oil level, is by starting the engine, and get the oil at the normal operating temp, then park it on level ground, with the engine still running. Then use the dipstick in the top of the oil tank and measure the level. This is just about the only way to determine the correct oil level readings. Good luck, Tony.

Bingo. The dipstick shows an extra 1/2 liter of oil or so, while the gauge still reads 85%. I've never had an issue with an oil level gauge, before. First time for everything.

the oil level gage works fine if you verify it to the dip stick, which i have done. i dont keep mine topped up anyway. i use less oil if i keep it near or at the min mark. if i tracked the car then i would top it.

Agreed, I usually run within 1/2 liter of full, and this car has a front cooler, as well, so no risk to the engine. But as I said, I've never had an oil level gauge that was off by so much before. Thanks, all, I hope this is helpful for someone else. Trust me, searching on 'oil leak' on a 911 tech forum is going to get you lots of results.
