Alternator Question

Hi,

I've gone thru the numerous posts on Alternator issues.... but I've got a quick question before I pull mine out for testing. I've got a 79 SC, the warning light comes on with the ignition switch and goes off after the car starts... I've tested the voltage at the battery terminals & verified there is no charging current, the engine also runs at a faster idle... like there is no additional load from the alternator.... is there anything else I should check before pulling the alternator out..... Battery terminal readings are 12.46 and 12.36 running....

Thanks in advance

Light goes out/

Suggestion:

How old is it? Get it rebuilt at a local shop and you will know it will fit back in. there are different sizes. See my threads..... 2 or 3 different depths of alternators.

Also there are 2 types of diodes that are used. External and the pressed in ones. the alternator shop told me that the pressed in ones are better and can handle the heat better.
So if you get it rebuilt ask them to use the pressed in ones as they will last longer.

Mine needed rewound, so he sent it to shop to do that, it works better than new as he put in larger diodes..
It cost about 150 bucks not including the rewinding which was???100?

Thanks..... any idea why the alternator warning light would not show with the failure of the Alternator.... I know it's good because it's on with the ignition switch before the car starts.....

Alternator

Your issue may be belt tension. If your belt deflects more than its thickness (1/2 " ), it may be slipping. Also if fanblade can be turned by hand without belt /engine turning may be tension also. There are excellent examples of checking and adjusting the belt on this site.

Good Luck ,Eddie
