Oil dribbler for want of a better word. The bottom of the air box has rubber hose that collects oil from whatever source and sends it out to this item. You might want to keep it.

Hey Zot, thanks for reply. I may want to keep it?...why? It wouldn't be anything I'd need for an '81 SC engine? or yes? RS

It was used up to SC but after that the oil tank system was sealed and all vapors went to the throttle body. But if there is a tap on the bottom of the air box thats opened you might just run a hose to the piece you have to keep any residue off the top of the engine.

It looks like what is used on a CIS system. The oil vapor from the oil tank is routed to the airbox. At the bottom of the airbox is a drain. The drain is connected to the pipe you show - it is mounted on the top front passenger side of the engine. It is carefully located to drip the oil on the passenger side exhaust.

I was going to reply earlier, but I didn't think a 70 with carbs would have one of these. It looks like someone capped it off.

So then the rubber piece is the 'cap off' someone did? Flat6 said this was used "up to" the SC engines. And why would they design it to drip onto an exhaust...that causes smoke...my friend likes t say that "one single drop of oil will take 10 minutes to burn off"and.....smoke.

Anyone have a picture of this thing installed on a motor?

I too have a similar part from a 1970T & would also like to see a picture of it properly installed. I must admit it was one of those things I forgot to record exactly where it came from during engine removal & dis-assembly.

Thanks & Cheers

Here it is on my 73.5 CIS. The black rubber acts as a valve so air isn't drawn into the air box.

My Aprilia has what I believe to be a similar "feature". It is a dry-sump engine and crankcase vapors build up in the airbox over time - especially at high RPMs and very especially if you overfill the oil and spend time running near redline. It has a clear tube hanging down from the airbox, plugged so the oil doesn't drip out or dirty air go back up. I suppose the thing is clear so you can see how much oil has collected and drain it if necessary.

the black "cap" has a slit at the bottom as a drain,
strategically aimed at the heat exchanger to get that distinctive aroma.
