Can you confirm this rotor/suspension diagnosis?

79 SC

When driving, the front left wheel would thunk just a little bit and especially when turning.

I pulled off the wheel and found the caliper slightly loose, retightened the caliper (I had replaced the front calipers about 1k ago) and test drove--same problem.

Just took the wheel off again and spun the rotor. There's one spot on the rotor where the wheel rubs and slows a little against the caliper.

So my thought is that the rotor is warped, possibly caused by the cheap caliper I installed.

Your thoughts? In Austin. Many thanks. Jack

Factory wheels should not rub factory brake rotors or brake calipers unless you're attempting to mix and match components from various model years. What components do you have?

You can confirm rotor warp (runout) with a dial indicator. You can get one from Harbor Freight or equivalent - good enough for most jobs.

but that won't cause the "thump" sound. Check the ball joint out and the tie rod ends for slop/play.
Might be time for a full front-end refurbish. A-arm bushings can and do ware out.
A front end stock refurbish is not that costly for another 150k of trouble free cruising.

Mind reader? I have 150,100 miles on the SC, never been cracked.

Anyway I did the "wiggle wheel" test and yoinked the tie rods and ball joints and all seemed firm, but obv I'm no expert.

Sherwood, I have restored Fuchs and aftermarket calipers (not OEM) and original rotors.

This is the first time I've felt completely unable to diagnose...but thanks for the advice.

I think you need more force than two hands can push on the wheels. Try this: with the car on the wheels, have someone moving the steering wheel back and forth (just a little but quickly) while your hand is on the tie-rod "feeling" for clunks and looking for movement at the ball joint and tie-rod ends. repeat for the other side. Check that the steering rack is not moving, or anything else for that matter. If you can't find anything wrong, just replace everything, good for the economy!
