For the life of me I don't understand why people continue to post questions about 996 cars on the air cooled 911 forum. Most guys here don't know squat about the cars and will slag them out of ignnorance (sorry JW, no offense to you sir). They don't leak water, some transmissions are weak but this is not a common problem, the engines don't make mysterious noises....that said:

The problem with the 996 is that the motor is unreliable. The 99 models were the most prone to engine problems. Later models, especially the 2002+ (3.6 litre) models, were better and more reliable although all 996 motors are susceptable to catastrophice failure. The exact fail rate is not known for sure, but 10% seems to be the number that is resolving. The good news is that the motors that don't fail are strong. light, tractable, torquey, revvy...they are really nice motors.

My 2002 996 is a really fantastic car. I loved my 1978 SC for 12 years and I'm looking for another similar air coolded car to keep as a toy, but the 996 is a better machine in all the normal metrics. It's really a good car, I drive it every day and I can't say enough good things about it. It's *HUGE* value for money, it's fast and responsive, the chassis is taut. It doesn't look as good as a 911 but that's a small price to pay.

$21K is pretty much the going rate for a 1999 model nowadays. I paid $26.5 for my 2002 earler this year.

But enough of this talk on the 911 forum.. Go to Rennlist or Renntech and do some proper research. As it is this thread is going to turn into another shi+storm. Wait till someone says you can't DIY a 996. That *really* gets my back up. They're easier to work on than a 911, and there's loads less maintenance to do anyway.
