915 Trans ID

How can I ID a 915 trans that looks like it had been dragged across the floor, and the numbers are not readable? It is missing the differential and stubs. The person selling it can get me any pics needed.

Tks!

How many teeth on the pinion gear? 7 or 8
what kind of metal is it? mag or alum
Does it have a mech speedo hook up?

If it's a magnesium case (housing) it'll be a '77 or older. If it has a connection on the nose for a speedo cable it'll be a '75 or older. If it has a fixed throwout bearing guide tube, with an internal ring inside its tip that reduces the size of the opening, it'll be a '72 or very early '73. If it has a fixed TOB guide tube without an internal ring, it'll be a '73.5 - '75. If it has a removable TOB guide tube, and an early, non-spring-type, clutch cable linkage it's a '76. If it's aluminum it'll be a '77 or later...

If the diff side cover is off, how many teeth on the head of the pinion shaft? 7 teeth = '72-74; 8 teeth = '75>.

Here's what I was sent, looks like it won't work for my needs:

It’s a mag case (filings burned brilliantly), has fixed T.O. bng sleeve, w.o. internal ring, so my best guess would be 1974, maybe '75. 7 Teeth on the pinion (2 are broken off), and the bell housing has a casting number on it, 915 301 101 0

sounds like youre right a late 73 , 74 or 75 ROW. US 75 boxes had an 8 tooth pinion.
