Desert temp oil cooler
I have an 81 911 SC. I live in Arizona, and next summer will be my first with this car. I had a 996 with no problems; water cooling has its advantages.
Is anyone in the low desert gotten by with just a trombone oil cooler? If a supplemental cooler is needed, is a Carrera cooler adequate, or will a center mount be needed? |

When you start getting up towards 95* and higher, the trombone cooler really won't cut it. I put a Carrera cooler in the Rt fender and I can drive with the AC on in temps up to about 105* outside air temp. I use 100 to 105 as a limit for my car, YMMV.

I live in Austin, Texas, and just went through a summer of record days above 100 degrees. I have a front trombone cooler and I can tell you my oil temp would get to 215-230 on a normal short trip. Turn on the A/C, or sit in traffic, and forget it--you'll hit 240 and get thisclose to 250 in a heartbeat. That's with Castrol GTX 20/50 oil. If I had the money and time, I'd probably get a Carrera cooler w/ fan, but only after making sure it would make an ACTUAL difference. I'm not gonna pay that much if it only knocks 5 degrees off. Once the ambiant temparature gets to 95-100+ degrees, I think we're all fighting an uphill battle, no matter what cooler you have on it.

I think if you upgrade (which you definitely should), you'd also be well served by putting in a fan. At least that's what I've gathered from research on this forum. You'll need a way to move air past that cooler when you're stopped in traffic.
For what it's worth, I'm in CO. I'll be putting a front mount cooler in my car this winter. I probably won't mess with a fan, because I don't use this car for commuting, just weekend drives (avoiding traffic at all costs). And it's usually a lot cooler here than AZ. --- Tom '75 targa |

Upgrade to the later model cooler. Did this years ago and very happy with the results.

I'm halfway thru an install,
didn't really need it, but had a few things apart an decided to go for it. I'll install the fan later if I find it necessary. The token picture ![]() ![]() In 1980 I worked at the Arizona Biltmore, beautifull country.

Sounds like an upgrade is mandatory. Any feelings on which cools better: front mount (with fan)
or Carrera cooler with fan? |

FMOC is the most efficient. A fan would (only) help with idling in traffic.

What type of front valance is applicable with a FMOC?

For the front mounted there are several valance that can be fitted below the bumper if you're not looking to change the entire front end.
This is just 1 example. ![]() The carerra cooler doesn't require changing the bumper or valance.

You may want to consider a 28 tube to replace your trombone it's a much better heat sink and not as dependent on air flow as radiator type, no need to change front valance, add fan etc. I'm in southern NM, heat mid 90's in summer, run a 2.5 liter nothing over 225 and that's flogging on a track.

I live where the temps will be >115 degrees for 8-10 weeks of the year. I don't want to park my car that long. That's why I'm trying to get ahead of this during the winter.
I'm even considering a tandem fender cooler and a FMOC. Replacing the valence is no big deal for me. Does anyone have any experience with Ruf vs Setrab FMOC? How about the finned oil lines? |

I put a carrera cooler in mine for less than 300$ . Thats with buying new flex lines also. Got it from a member on here. I used a toyota fan. Post a WTB one will surely pop up. Also make sure your brass lines under the car arnt crushed

Pretty much any with a big hole at the front will work. PO notched the tub for more airflow through the cooler and fitted a Ruf style bumper cap:

Nice looking 77. I like that install. I'll have to look for a Ruf valance.

Definitely add a fan. Before I added one, idling in traffic with the AC on it would definitely get too hot, like 250, & I'd have to switch off the AC. I added the Elephant Racing fan and now even when it's 110 in Tucson with the AC on I don't get much past 9:00 on the temp gauge. The ER fan also moves a lot more air than the stock Carrera fan.

Go with a Carrera cooler and fan. If you're gonna spend the time and money, do it right the first time.
