High pressure area - for intake. Same principle as the current GT3.

...One of the cool things about Porsche's family of cars, particularly the 911, is all of the fun things that can be done to them.

Consider a car like mine from a few years ago... mid-70's 911 with composite later-model bodywork and a modest interior, a cage and a weight of about 1950 pounds. Then consider (unlike mine) a 3.8 twin turbo motor installed in it. Who knows how much power-- north of 700 for sure. Now this car also has heat, and is driven, not infrequently, on the owner/builder's ~45 minute commute to work (on street tires, not slicks). Now consider that this car is also raced, and it shows up at PCA Club Racer at Laguna and beats all of the other cars, including highly modified GT3 Cups. Now the car has different body work, an engine with slide valves and is active in vintage racing.

^ Excellent comment.

PVX beast needs a couple of goPro's mounted on board to shoot something like this...

What a great build. I like the attention to weight distribution and shaving weight. I have thought of building some tail lights for my project and also moving more weight forward.

I especially like the oil tank, it was something I wasn't thinking about. I too will be moving my engine forward. I am interested on how you tied the front side of the torsion tube into the chassis. I was planning on picking it with the roll cage.

North hollywood speedometer does gauge conversions as shown on Pete's car. But there are others that do that too.

Hi,

Amazing work!

It is hard to believe that these two little radiators are able to keep the engine temperature down.
Are there any more rads in the car or just those two?

Many Thanks!

Pete,

Did you run the cooling tubes through the rockers? Did you do that before the bodywork, or after? - please say after...

I'm doing a Renegade conversion and I've decided to run aluminum tubes for the coolant runs.

Thanks,

Hal

With the front fenders off you can make the holes and run the cooling tubes after the bodywork is done...

Just the two, but they are high quality, thick, and need careful ducting and four fans to keep temps down in traffic. They do a good job at speed, but it took a couple tries to get traffic temps where we want them on hot days. Doesn't help that the cup engine idles at 2k rpm, and throws enough heat that the headers glow red at idle...

I'm slowly working through some potential suspension changes in all my spare time, and a couple other changes. Learning some interesting things, I'll start a new thread at some point...

Any idea why it won't let me edit my old posts on the previous page to fix the pictures? In any case, here are some of them again:

kojo911 01-05-2013 06:28 PM

Pete, do you know the ballpark weight difference between the water cooled gt3 motor and an air cooled 993 motor. The car looks awesome I think I saw it out at point Reyes over the summer.

Thanks
Ken

Ken, vs a 993 VRam you're looking at ~48 lbs empty, ~56 lbs including water weight within the motor, more like low to mid 90s with the full weight of all cooling systems included (also accounting for less oil cooling weight), though much of that is forward in the car and so doesn't hurt the weight distribution.

No, those are the 17s. The 18s and 19s look huge on an early car:

itsnotanova 12-08-2013 05:50 PM

Do you have any pics without the tape on the rear? I've been thinking about 19's for the tire/wheel selection but not sure they can look good. Did you go back to 17s?

kojo911 12-09-2013 08:00 AM

Thanks Pete, love the car.

Don't think I've got better shots with the 18s and 19s. In my opinion they look too big for the car. I run them with street tires and only in the wet (hence no good pics), the 17s have R compounds on and I drive on them almost exclusively in the dry.

I'd recommend no bigger than 18s in most situations. It's only the corner case where you need to run the widest possible rear street tire where 19s make any sense, and that's going to be very rare.

Pete

Do you drive backroads?
Is the suspension mainly for smooth roads, or does it work well on some bumpier surfaces too?
Thank you

The suspension setup is fairly soft. I use the car largely for autocross, and it needs to be relatively soft to be able to put all the power down at relatively low speeds. However the car's really too fast to enjoy pushing it on back roads. It'll do it, but you really don't want to explore the limits- that's best left to a closed course. The video link here gives you an idea why:

You made #9: Top 10 builds of 2013 | Chromjuwelen.com

alpinaturbo 01-09-2014 04:35 PM

Thanks for the explanation Pete,
Being soft actually will help the car on backroads, and pushing the car to near 10/10s would be really irresponsible on backroads.
But it sounds like it actually is an exciting proposition on our backroads.
With the power it puts you can pass when needed, without exposing yourself to risk, and the softer setup will enable 7/10s storming along for great pleasure.

Would love to see you sometime in the Santa Cruz mountains, for fun drive: Hwy 9, Pescadero and Hwy 84 backside, Bear Creek Rd, Stage Rd, Skyline from 92 to 9, Butano Park, Jamison Creek Rd, Pine Flats, Empire Grade, Boony Doon Rd, Page Mill Rd backside and front side too, Alpine Rd off Page Mill on backside,
Hope this gives you some ideas, and inspires you to join.

Oh, it's exciting, that's not the issue. I have driven many of the roads you mention in it, though more often I prefer to take a slower car that's more suited. Slow car driven fast and all. But one of these days...

Such a great car. You guys executed it beautifully!

Maybe I missed it but what brand/model wheels are those 17's? They look perfect on your car!

17" Kodiak FX wheels. I worked with Jeff Alton here to get something in that size that could clear the PCCBs.

The Radium King 04-12-2014 12:14 PM

hi. late to the game on this one. wondering about how much room there was in the engine bay. i'm looking more at swapping a boxster engine with a modified 5-speed (so, presumably, a shorter transmission than yours). was it necessary to cut the firewall? to move the suspension back? or was this done to obtain optimal weight distribution? thanks.

petevb 04-12-2014 02:43 PM

Cutting will probably depend on the exact length of your gearbox. The 6 speed is long enough that it requires it, the G50 5 speed is long enough to require some modification, the 915 is fine.

Otherwise if we hadn't done the mods for weight distribution (motor and suspension relocation) no cutting would have been required other than for the water lines.

The Boxster engine/ trans is quite a different beast, so you won't necessarily be able to extrapolate from my experience.

MaxZmus 06-27-2014 04:09 AM

Please someone go and make a long vid of this thing…….like a proper one.

Mahler9th 06-27-2014 07:09 AM

Video? That would be cool.

Petevb: If you decide to do a special video, check out the work of Roth Rind Productions... they have made a few videos about the Spec 911 and the local PRC racing scene. You might find some on youtube and Vimeo. I believe Roth Rind were engaged by JWE and/or some of the Spec 911 racers whom you may know.

petevb 06-27-2014 01:31 PM

Thanks guys, I'll give that some thought...
