Question Gas Tank Filter

What to expect when cleaning the filter on the drain plug?
How much dirt/gunk have people found on the filter?
Excessive? Moderate?
How is the plug sealed? Gasket or sealant?

Thanks.

Wanted to revisit this, as I'm tempted to drop this piece and have a look. Will study the PET but recall that it's only a wire mesh assembly, of sorts?

Anyone engaged this process on the '89 ('sh) models.

Do you clean it or replace it..?

Thanks,

Doyle

I also noted in one of Steve's (W) previous post on this section, he STRESSED to be really careful here ....I never understood why? (other than being (normally) careful. Possibility of damaging something?

Hi Doyle,

A very Merry Christmas to you,....

That filter assembly is nylon and not meant to be cleaned as you cannot really blow it out from the inside. Its a replacement item, only.

One needs the sealing ring to ensure there are no leaks, too.

I just opened the drain plug on my 79 SC. I used a 22mm 1/2 inch drive hex head with a breaker bar to break the seal. The plug is brass, so don't cheap out on the correct tool or you could strip out the plug. The screen was partially coated with small debris, mostly paint flecks from the interior filler neck. I cleaned it with alcohol and replaced the o-ring. If the screen is not serviceable them replace it.

The plug on my '80 looked like plastic and I tried to open it in 2008 but gave up when it appeared to be fairly tight.
I didn't want to damage anything.

Are some plugs plastic and some brass??

Interested to see what you find on the screen.

Those are ALL brass (and I agree, they appear fragile).

These are tight for good reason so with the proper tool, give it a tap with a hammer to loosen it. Its sealed with an O-ring.
