Should I buy a NEW heater blower motor? Or is another used one an OK idea?

I'm having angst and a big dilemma... buy Another used blower motor, or just bite the bullet and get a new moto from our host. It's not all that expensive,,, but I'm stalling on making a decision here

How about backdate heat as an option? Might be a bit more expensive but it really cleans up the look of the engine bay. Well worth it in my opinion.

I'd give you my motor but it is being stored in a POD right now b/c I am between homes.

I voted to just buy a new one. $120 and it's done - there's no way to know if a used one will last 2 days after you install it.

Buy a new one, install it, and then don't worry about it for another 30 years !

pelican classifieds - heat ducts

This guy is selling the two outlets for $120 + shipping. In the event that you decide to backdate.

If it was me i'd pull the old one, get all the dimensions from it, and go to NAPA
and order one that will work for about 35.00.
I haven't replaced the engine mounted blower yet but i have the fresh air one.

Would taking it to an electrical shop and having them rebuild it with new and modern materials be an option???

I read through the backdate posts, and I don't think I want to do all that right now.

I could pay a guy to try to fix the motor, but that would 40-50 bucks at least, anyway...

Or do I just buy me a new motor from Pelican parts?

Or find a really really good used one?

dude, bust out the bucks for a new one. You'll kick yourself if you get a used one that lasts for a year or 2.

And if you ever decide to backdate, your blower assembly will be worth more $$$ if you decide to sell it.

Not to hijack the thread, but what does backdating do for you, give you forced hot air off the engine blower?

Dan - you got it. Early 911s didn't have a blower motor. Came in maybe '74? Guys with the older cars have told me they have plenty of heat, but I'd not give up my blower motor.

Scott - Search for "heater blower" or something similar to pull up posts on how to replace the cheap and not all that durable Bosch motor with something much better and not expensive. It is a common topic. The Bosch is not rebuildable. You can take it apart (some of them, anyway) and maybe replace brushes. But it is the bearings that go. I've tried lubricating them, but without real success.

When the "used but still good" replacement I have starts screeching, I'll hunt up those posts and put in the better motor.

I just unplugged my blower motor. The heat acts like the backdated version; the engine fan is the 'blowerfan'.

Works great as long as you are not idling in zero degree weather. Need engine revs for the 'blower fan'.

Even in 20 degree weather, on a run, I have to push the levers back down; gets too hot.

Eric

Pelican sells the same part.

Pelican Parts - Product Information: 911-624-151-02-PH)

Like you, I also like to use our host first and normally even if they don't show the item in their catalog, they can still supply the part.

well,, after all this discussion, I opted for a used one again. It's on the way.
I will post and let you know how it works. If this one dies, I'm gonna get the new one from Pelican.

Hey Scot,

had a squeaky heater blower motor as well. Opted to pull the assembly--easy--and disassemble. Pulled the motor and squirel cage out of the assembly. There shouild be a little in and out play on the motor shaft--mine was tight.

Then removed the s-cage from the motor and shot a little lube at where the shaft enters the motor housing. after a little spinning and pulling of the shaft it seemed to free up a little. Reassembled and the squirels are no longer screaching for now.

Shaft play may have been the culprit. Visual on the brushes looked ok

Will probably just order the replacement motor listed above down the road and be done with it. Mine is a 77-911S with 190k on the clock.

It's been very cold here lately so will be happy to have good heat without the sound effects.

Cheers, Jim

Heater backdate looks better. No blower to go out in the future. My backdated heat cooks my feet and I have to turn it off... gives me all the heat I need and more.
