saving the "made in west germany" tag and car ID tag during paint work...
Guys,
My SC is in to the shop for paint and, we're going pretty deep with doing door jambs and fully disassembling the car. Question is how do I salvage and reapply the "Made in West Germany" tag: ![]() Also --- where do I get a new one of these: ![]() Thanks, guys! Paul

Drill out the rivets on the WG tag. Blue tape the VIN tag.
OR you can get a repo VIN tag but that is technically illegal. There is a guy that makes repos but, you need to do a search.

I wouldn't take either off just carefully mask. My 13 year old masked mine and it looks great. Paint film is super thin once cured so it will look fine and they'll be original as they left Germany.

paint tag:
sand the rivets flat so can carefully drill them out without destroying the tag. actually, these fasteners are not rivets, but "drive screws". Order new ones when you reinstall the tag.

Take them off and then replace new after paint. You don't want a hard edge around the tag, that would be the first place the clear fails.
Also, fresh paint and old tags...no thank you. |

Couple of tips. I have been down this road with high dollar Concours type restorations.
Carefully remove the paint tag by drilling the "rivets" as suggested. The new Genuine Porsche rivets sold through the dealer are way too large and are plated with gold zinc. I sourced old nickle plated escutcheon pins that are very close to original for re install. (Think little nails with a dome head) The paint tags are readily available from several sources should yours get damaged during removal. For the VIN sticker, if you want to keep the original, mask it with clear packing tape. You can 'see' what you are masking as you work and the tape is also much thinner than traditional masking tape. This will leave a much thinner cleaner edge when un masking. It is also most advisable to remove the tape after a short window of flash time before the new paint is fully dried. The paint will flow out this way. (Have a conversation with your painter so they are on board) As others have said "reproductions" are available where a sticker is missing, damaged, or not going to be re-usable (color change etc). Best with your repaint! Cooper |
