Auto Heater in 86 - Need help

Need help with the auto heater in my 86 targa. I think that I have several problems. Up until several months ago, the heater worked in all 9 positions and I could hear the foot well blowers.

Several months ago, the blowers stopped working in positions 1-6. They would only work when the dial was set to 7, 8, or 9.

This evening when I turned the heater on to position 7, I heard a squeal and then nothing. System now only works on position 9.

I've read many threads on this topic, and I'm not even sure where to start.

I check fuse 8 in the front, and all three fuses in the engine compartment. No issues with the fuses. Can some one help me get started on solving this problem.

I suspect that your footwell blowers need lubrication or one of them has seized up. They tend to squeal just before they freeze up. Take the carpet covered covers off the blowers and inspect. kb,

I think that the previous post may well be correct.

What is interesting is the simultaneous loss of both blowers.
One would think that although they run in parallel,
one might go before the other.

If the motors did seize, the 25A fuse may be blown.

However, the ckt diagram references fuse #2 not #8 for the foot well blowers.

Also, the engine compartment fuses service only the engine
compartment heater blower/rear window defogger.

#1 16A-Blower relay
#2 25A-Blower Motor
#3 Rear Window Defogger

For your diagnostics, get a voltmeter & a Bentley.

Good luck,

Gerry
