Post What do you all think?

I have been looking at the chain gear off of my layshaft.
I think that there is some pretty evident wear on the "working side" of the teeth on this sucker.
I don't know how clearly you wil be able to see what I am talking about because of the fact that I had to shrink it alot to be able to upload the pic onto the site...but maybe...

What I am looking at is on the left side of the teeth...

Well....

When in doubt, rip it out....

If you do not feel comfortable with it's condition, then, for your own sanity replace it.

It is too tough to tell from the photo... Does not look like an extreme amount of wear from the photo, but..... Photos sometimes lie...

Hi Leland,
I'd say change that sucker if it doesn't end up costing on arm and a leg. You can clearly see that the chain climbed up on the teeth. It would probably wear the new chain faster. On a bicycle, this wouldn't be a question, and my bike has a 1/2 donkey power engine...

I hope this unit is not difficult to replace at this point in your rebuild because Superman the Cheapskate is going to recommend this part be replaced. I think I can see that the valleys of these teeth are not round. You see, when sprockets wear, they wear in a teardrop shape, and I think I'm seeing that familiar teardrop shape as I look at the valleys in the picture. Sprockets that are shaped this way will wear the chain faster, and they will do this by allowing the chain to ride up the teeth, rather than settling down into the deepest part of the valley. This riding business could possibly affect your vavle timing just a tiny bit as well, I would think. For a rebuild like yours, Leland, where everything worn gets renewed, I'm suggesting new sprockets and a new chain.

Well I can see that there is definately a different shape to the teeth than there is supposed to be.

The sides of the teeth are different angles. The side that the load is on has a shallower (is that a word?) angle than the other.
It is more evident in person. Maybe I should just mail it to everyone for inspection.

This is just an afterthought. I've already replaced both chains, chain gears, and aluminum layshaft gears. I was just looking at it a bit harder.
FYI they only cost me like $24 bucks a pop so I suggest changing them as cheap insurance during a rebuild.

You might as well change them while you're in there. 24 bucks per gear is cheap insurance. Don't forget to do new chains and ramps too.

I can't tell from your photos but from what you describe they are worn. If looks at a tooth the it will appear "hooked" on the side of the tooth that pulls the chain. When new both side to the tooth should appear the same.

Bicycles have the same problem. As the freewheel cogs and the chainrings on the cranksets wear the chain will ride up and over the gear. Granted your motor has tensioners to compensate for wear but eventually it will slip. Worn gears also cause the chain to wear faster.

On a bike is can cause you to OTB (over the bars), on a motor it's only more $$$ and time.

When in doubt replace it.

Best,

Pete

Hello

No doubt they will not suit to a good engine. Also check your cam drive gear for wear.
Just messure them like the intermediate shaft gears.

Thanks Roland. I assume the gears you are talking about are the ones that attach to the cams themselves?
I have thought about replacing those as well.

And those top secret military documents are expenditure documents for C-4.

Demo pay...ahh the smell of money...
