Oil Pressure Sedning Unit Generic Replacement

The Porsche VDO pressure sender is disgustingly pricey and not readily available due to the odd thread size. You can buy the same sending unit (0-5 bar) with a different thread for <$30 at various places online (eguages.com for one).

So I took mine, cut the can off, carefully ground the remaining nut flat, and drilled & tapped it for an M10x1.0. They sell 1/8 NPT senders also, but I had the M10 tap sitting around, and I like the sealing washer concept.

I did have to change the electrical connector to a screw eye.

I'm actually surprised Wayne doesn't sell the aftermarket units and a bushing as an option.

At any rate, it works fine, and I have an extra low pressure contact that I won't use. For some reason, the sender with the low pressure contact was cheaper than the one for just the guage.

Think Wayne sells two different models.
I ordered the OEM unit at $78.00 dollars for my 89 911 and Pelican also sells a
cheaper "non OEM" unit for something like $45.00 dollars.

Funny thing is my oil pressure gauge was pegged out at 4000 rpms as of last week and my car just got back from a three day DE and the stupid gauge is working now ... go figure ...

New sender unit is on the way from Pelican but i will change it regardless !
As Ed says, pretty ingenious fix indeed

Cheers !

Very ingenious.

My .02--- If at sometime you have the line off, have someone tig weld the fitting into the line. One less chance for a leak.

I have a non-OEM sender (URO, add umlaut to the U), and it keeps making the pressure guage fluctuate wildly between 4 and 5 bar when the engine gets hot ... and it's less than 1 year old.

Nice job Frank. Very smart idea to make a coupler out of the old sender base.
