Yellowbird front bumper help!

I have the F/G front bumper mounted on my 79SC and I am trying to use a 964 smile. It works great around both fenders, but I can't seem to get it to work under the hood. I had to trim it so the hood work open and close. When the hood is closed it is too high above the hood. I know I'm not the only one to use a 864 smile so any suggestions would help greatly

I know about trimming the smile, but I need to see what was done. Someone has had this same problem.

I didn't have to trim mine. I just adjusted it, in out until the hood just cleared it enough to close.

Hi,
I used a 964 smile as the gasket between the RUF bumper and the body. As you say to the wings (fenders) to bumper were easy but between (and under the hood) was a little more tricky. I didnt have to do any trimming to the smile.
I drilled one hole to locate the centre of the smile (pip) but before that I put a bead of Sikaflex along the bumper/smile base, aligned then put the bonnet (hood) down on on the smile to 'clamp it' while the Sikaflex cured.
Once cured, I then used screws and cup washers to finish on the inside.
Fits purfect.
Hope this helps - few pictures.

Regards

Jammo.

Interesting since I'll be facing the same problem in the future. Best looking Ruf conversion I've seen JAMMO - stunning.

Good luck

pics

speedman, i have sent a couple of pics as well as a short video of the smile. for some reason or another i keep getting mail administrator error messages. my front spoiler is an actual Ruf part and the front smile seems to be a factory part with no modifications. my front compartment lid is aluminum but i would think that the front lip would be the same as a stock lid. i will try to get a couple of pics and retry to your email address...

Thanks! I also have a RUF factory front bumper and it fits great. When your hood is shut is the lip of the seal under the hood?

LIN7320948 - from the picture of your car it looks like I may know where you are in Easley. Been in SC your whole life?

yes it is. the seal appears to be designed to do this...tapered front to rear such that the rear of the seal is very thin. does you hood overlap the seal slightly?

Speedman - got your PM too. I did essentially the same thing as Jammo with good results; except I used a silicone adhesive, and 5 stainless sheetmetal screws through fender washers, spaced across the seal in the recessed area, so the hood covers them when closed. It's not 100% perfect but workable.

So you put RTV between the top of the seal and and bottom in the groove between the two and then shut the hood on the seal to hold the seal in place until the RTV cures. Does the extra thickness of the seal cause the hood to be higher where it meets the fenders.

No, the silicone spreads out thin. The 964 seal is thicker than the Carrera smile so it takes a bit of push to latch the hood but it works OK. The only flaw I have is the front edge of the seal wants to lift up a bit, from being pushed down at the back edge by the hood.

OK Now I am confused. You mention a carrera smile and a 964 smile. Is the Carrera smile the same as the SC on my 79 or something different and the 964 smile has a groove in it that both front fenders fit into and that groove runs under the hood area. SO you glued the part od the smile that runs under the hood down, right?

SC and Carrera ("impact bumper" cars) are the same.

Correct. But there are also screws holding it in position.

Hi efhughes,
the lower lip is made from the original impact bumper lower rubber lip. I cut the two 'upward' ends off and shaped it to fit. In the photo it was not completely finished as I had to shave off some at the furthest edges to blend it flat at the bottom.
The main reason I used this was due to its relative ease to use, but moreso it's stiffness, afterall it is a very important air dam that channels frontal air from going underneath to the sides of the car. It is as close to the ground as I dare go and is as the original CTR in level.
I have seen other materials used, but have also seen them fold over due to the pressure bending them over - this stays stiff (once bent to suit).
Hope this helps.
Regards

Jammo.
