83 row 911 titled as a 84--help
I am looking to buy what is clearly a rest of world (row) 1983 911 that is titled as a 1984 911. Can this be corrected? How?
Also, can someone please verify that engine serial # of 6305456 is an 83 engine. Thanks, Gary |

'83 Engine serial #.........
Quote:
Gary, The 3rd. character for the '83SC engines have 'D' followed by the production serial. Look again in your engine if the the 3rd character is really '0' or 'D'. If your engine has 63D5456 on it, you have an '83SC motor. HTH. Tony |

You sure the third digit is a "0"? If so that is a 1980 SC engine. If by some chance you misread and the third digit is actually a "D" then it would be a 1983 engine.

They title cars differently in Europe. They don't really have the same goofy system we have here, where a 2010 car model can be manufactured in 2009. If the car was made in 2009, it's titled as a 2009. I learned this when comparing 959s. So, I'm sure your car was titled first in Europe, and then brought here.

thanks for the reply in re engine. i checked with seller and he says i misread D as an 0.
i wish DMV didn't make similar mistake labeling car as a 1984 when it is a 1983. |

actually mine is also a 1988 model, registered in 1988, but manufactured in 1987.
as far as I know the cutover is some time in late summer, when the new production run starts. the VIN should clarify which model it is

wayne, so you are saying that some 911SC's were titled in europe as an 84 notwithstanding a signicant change in models betw the years? that would be kinda like titling a 356A as a 1960 car. do you think i could go to california dmv to get changed or maybe what i am hearing is to forget it. thanks to all that have posted with a reply. gary

The DMV of your state will have the authority to change and verify chassis and engine identification numbers. Bring documentation with you that will substantiate the model years such as 911 books from Porsche authorities, Brian Anderson, Paul Friere, Peter Morgan, etc. The car will have to be inspected by a state official. Be prepared for long delays in getting this resolved...........government bureaucracy at its worst.
Also, if you have the import papers for this car and they show the same numbers in error, you may be out of luck. It is very hard to undo U.S. Customs documentation.

I had a similar issue with my Mercedes. It was titled as a 1961, however after investigating the VIN, it turns out it was a 1957 car! Apparently, in the old days, whenever you first titled a car is when it gets the date. The 2 working theories are that the car was used with dealer plates back in the day and not titled until later or the car sat on the lot for 4 years...
I investigated retitling with the corrected date...it required a little paper work but in the end, it wasn't worth the effort, so I left it as a 1961. |
