Can you use a 993 fuel tank in a 911
Hi all
I did a quick search but did not find anything. So just wondering if it is possible to use a 993 tank in my SC, which has now started to leak. I got a few options open to me Get brand new tank - too expensive Repair the tank using tank sealer like the POR15 products. Get a refurbed tank - I don't like this idea as the last one only lasted three years :-( Use a fuel cell? - might be expensive but could get a second hand one maybe Or look into using a 993 tank, but I don't know if it will fit Any feedback appreciated Cheers Jakes |

nope- won't fit
the plastic 993 tank sits in a differently designed chassis than your SC. tank sealer is probably the best bet, as shipping an excellent rust free unit from usa would cost more than the tank itself (we get very nice ones from time to time for $250-300 ) and then once you get it, probably a good idea to coat it given your climate

OK,
So ... What is the latest fuel tank that will fit an early 911? Best, Grady

1989 911 (not C2) will fit. you will have to make some fitting mods to have supply and return, get a space saver tire if your car is pre 74, and fiddle with venting tube size on early cars (swb?)
Other than those details you get a 21 gallon tank (vs 17) on pre 74 cars that is usually much better shape than what came out. But the tanks are the same from 74-89. also 74-89 tanks have a collector inside of them so the fuel pump does not starve under hard brake or cornering when petrol level is low

Thanks for the replies guys.
A pity it doesn't as I quite fancied the idea of having one that will never rust and there was one available at a decent price. Anyway I think I'll remove it this weekend and have a look to see just how bad it is and take it from there. Thanks again cheers Jakes

Well.... since you asked that, the plastic 85 liter tank, as fitted to the european S and RS models. These go for around $2000 usd and up
That will never rust BUT it will reduce your ground clearance as they molded a large section that hangs down below the stock opening

I know it's a bit late to the game, but here's an inside shot of the swirl devise. From an 88'
![]() On the right-side you can see a small stainless box. There is a steel tube that goes from the "hump" for the spare, up to this in order to let the air escape when you fill the tank. I cut the top open on this one just for kicks. If you were to try and seal this tank, I believe you would create more problems than you solve. I saw a picture of this swirl devise earlier by another member, however I don't believe it showed the air bleed tube and baffle. Don't hold me to the terminology. ![]()
