68 911L Value
Does anybody have an idea what a 68 911L goes for? Rebuilt engine with 2.7 piston and cylinders, cam reground to touring with Zenith carbs. Motor has roughly 25,000 since rebuild in 90, car is at 205,000. Orignial fuch wheels with no rust on pan or front suspension area, little rust around drivers windshield. He claims that there is no rust under the rear seats either. Paint is faded and rough, but the body is very straight. Currently registered with the same owner since 84. I can get it for 10 grand.
Thanks

If the car runs and is not full of rust but needs paint, then $10k is a fair price. There were not a lot of 911L's sold in the US so this will be a good car to have. I would spend some time poking around the car looking for more rust. Is this a coupe, 5spd? Pics?
You should have the engine checked well though. If it needs a rebuild then the value would be lower for sure. See if he has receipts for the engine rebuild. Did he build on the original case? Check the engine and trans numbers to see that they match. I have a '68 with 2.8 P's and C's on the original case and it's a real screamer Post the VIN if you have it.

Stopped by and took some pictures and learned that the case was built from a 70 914-6 with 2.7 pistons and cylinders. I found no rust/rot on the rockers or the floor pan. The jack tube on both sides is completely solid. No rust around the rear window either. Looks as though an electric sun roof was added early in life. The weird part is the vin plate on the door said bureau of automotive repair and listed the car as a 70 with a 2.0. Strange

The BAR tag means that it was off the road at some point, without it's engine and the owner took the 100% legal approach under California law to put it back on the road. Most people would have just put another engine in it, and run it through smog testing without even telling the technician it was a replacement. For some reason, a previous owner wanted to do the replacement on the books.
