What year Boxster is an even trade for a over-loved 911SC
Done about everything fun to it that I want. It's stock in appearance.
Non sunroof coupe (silver met) Rebuilt engine per Wayne's book 59k ago Raceware rod bolts Elgin SC cams (cheater cam, as Dema called them) Timed for top end (woo000) new CIS parts ( a few times, only thing I hate about the car) Elephant rear bushings Nice seats Short shift (factory) Hella lights new rear window seal beautiful restored headliner (post on paint and body) Nice paint except for hood and front bumper (stone chips) Ipod hook up. Rebuilt transmission. New clutch 59K ago. AC-Scotts Independent with barrier hose completely redone (R12) Euro premuff (Porsche) Recently Tuned- New plug cap and rotor. Distributor rebuilt- racing curve. I realize it's not as loved as some of the other cool cars here, but I'm just curious if it is worthy of an even trade. Probably like finding a needle in a haystack. I'll get a pic up later.

Non sunroof coupe with rebuilt motor and trans... Are you sure you want to get rid of her?
Regardless of that... A later Boxter. Post 2002 and up would be a fair swap IMO. (you'll miss her if you do this)

Keep in mind the Boxster is likely to be the fastest depreciating car Porsche makes - your SC is not. That was at least partially what drove me to sell my 986 and buy my '84 Carrera.

Keep the SC and buy the Boxster outright and drive it for a while. I'm sure you'll end up selling it before too long and you'll still have your SC. Are you really sure you want a car that has less power and poorer handling than the SC? Besides that, do you really want a car where you can't see or touch the motor except from underneath?

Copy that! I sold a 2001 Boxster and bought an '87 Carrera. The Boxster may have been faster but the Carrera is waaay more fun - and built better.

I agree to look for a well kept Boxster; 2000 or later, S if you can afford it. I've owned countless 911s over the years, but really appreciate my '02 Box S. It is not a 911, but has very good power at around 280 (with mods), out handles most 911s and is very enjoyable to drive topless. But as I said, it isn't a 911 and can't be compared to the air cooled cars. The 2.7 and up cars are a blast to drive and are really cheap these days.
Own both if you can do it...you'd miss your SC (I miss my '83 triple black coupe). ![]()

If you got one from each production year, it might be worth it.
But it depends. If you want a convertible and are tired of your project, then it's worth less to you than the new thing with its excitement. Post some pics of your car, let some guys tell you an approximate value, and go on that. Don't do it.

But yes, they depreciate like crazy - they are the new 944. Look for a 2002 or later S - lots of car for the money. In 10 years it will be work probably 1/2 of what you SC is worth....

Lucky at this time to have both, a 2002 Boxster and an 87 3.2 Targa, the Boxster is more refined but the Targa is raw enjoyment. However my Boxster is faster then the Targa and I believe it also handles better. If I had to make a choice at this time I would still pick the 87 Targa over the Boxster.

The first truly exceptional model Boxster I've driven was an 2005 "S" model with 6-speed manual. The build quality was very high on that car, it was very fast, and its handling, steering and brakes almost defied description. Unfortunately, in this economy, you will not be able to achieve a trade for one of those, but will be looking at 2000-2003, with '03 models clearly winning the comparison battle. Be aware that if you're taller than 6'1", make sure that you fit in anything that you're considering buying, the pedals and roll-over hoops weren't moved until the above-mentioned '05. Oh, the '03 cars were the first to be fitted with a glass back window - in my mind, a big plus!
It's a bad time to sell an SC, but a good time to buy a Boxster. We currently have an '02 "S" with 51K miles (advertised as one-owner and original) in our local paper for $17.5K. Go figure...

Think about all the people on this site who have sold one car or another and have tales and pictures of the "one I never should have sold."
I remeber reading a post lately where some guy traded his old Speedster for a 924. A 924!! We look back and say WTF were you thinking?? I'm not saying that any SC would ever be in the same ball park as a Speedster, even one that sounds as nice as yours, but the Boxster could very well be the next 924. Just sayin' is all...

If you can, don't trade, you are limiting your potential market & options. Shop & buy the Boxster first, drive it for a while, then decide if you want to sell the SC. |

Dema would say not to do it...
Scott at Scott's Independent would say not to do it.... I think Peter "might" say to not do it, but he was really non-commital....(if he still had his shop he would say not to do it...) Whenever I get the itch to do a boxster, my wrench (Monty at Redmond European) starts to pull out receipts for new engines for them... Monty had a customer who really wanted one, but Monty kept calling it a "chick" car... so the customer finally goes OK, I'll get a boxsterS, and Monty told him it's "hot chick" car...thought that was kinda funny. I think they look good in silver or black with a hardtop and aftermarket Fikse type wheels in black. His shop and Aker's up here in Seattle have had factory new engines blow up within miles of replacement... I'm just sayin'..... hi to Pete Zimmerman! I gave you a lot of work in the late 80's early 90's. You did an engine rebuild and a side shifter conversion on my tangerine 914/6 (Joel Morenfelds old car, it was the ex Matsuda Collection car), and then you did an engine transplant on a ruby 62B cab for me, and finally you did a swap to carbs from mfi on a metallic green 71E targa. I also lived close by you out in Agoura. I moved out of state in the early 90's. Still heavily in the game!!! cheers, Eric Linden

Do you still have the "Six?" What a great car, I miss mine (the dark blue car with the 2.6 liter motor & M,S,X gears). Every minute spent driving that car, including staying with a 289 Cobra through about 100 mph in a Malibu stop-light GP!, is a fond memory. Cheers! back at ya'!

A Boxster is a fair trade for a Wopper combo. Without cheese.
