Valve gasket, graphite vs silicon
Am getting the stuff together for a complete valve adjust and tune and in looking for valve cover gaskets see there are both graphite and silicon (latter being more $'s), which is the best? Also, are the Bosch copper W5DC OK plugs or should I go with NGK BP7Es'?
thanks!

I have been using the silicon reusable gaskets for the last couple of years. I am very pleased with them; they seal well and I have no leaks. You must be careful and not rip them on the valve cover studs during a valve adjustment. The down side is they are expensive.
I use the NGK plugs in my '84 911 and they work very well. They are also a little cheaper than the Bosch copper plugs. But on the other hand, the Bosch coppers are also a very good plug. Whether you use the NGK or Bosch plugs, just make sure you have the proper heat range and plug gap. Good luck on your valve adjust and tune-up. Bruce |

I had a thread going last week about gaskets and I advised folks about something my mechanic (Porsche's for 20+ years) suggested. I opted for the fabric gaskets, but smeared wheel bearing grease on both sides so they were partially saturated. I layed them down on wax paper and lightly applied a cost of bearing grease on both sides unit the gaskets felt tacky and the grease was absorbed.
They slid on easy, came off easy and never leaked. The grease acted as a moisture barrier and they did not stick upon removal. For the $$$$$ I saved over the silicon gaskets, it was well worth it and I am convinced! Thats my story, and I am STICKING to it. Regards Bob 1973.5 T |
