Question on rear windshield glass seal... I have installed my rear glass and the lip of the seal is seated over the flange of the body opening as viewed from inside the car but on the exterior I'm not sure what the lip of the seal should look like at the top of the window under the vent. Should I be able to see the outboard lip of the seal around the entire perimeter? I am guessing the answer is yes. Can anyone send me a pic of their correct window seal at the top of the window just to confirm? Thanks.

The answer is indeed yes. THe metal trim can be manipulated to hold the seal close to the body. A thin ,curved piece of hardwood will bend the trim to better match the body shape. The trim is "T" shaped, you want to apply force to the side of the top of the vertical leg of the T if that makes sense. I have also used a wide, thin screwdriver with good success .

When I did my rear window it was in the summer and I just massaged it into place. It does take a bit but mine eventually settled in. I replaced the trim inside the rubber as well...

First question is did you buy the aftermarket seal? The Porsche seals are formed in the corners and the aftermarket ones are not. That's probably the problem. I found an old school glass guy who helped me with mine when I had the same problem. It took a lot of work and it wasn't perfect but it was a lot better than when we started.

Can someone post a pic of their seal at the top of the glass? It would really help me get a point of ref. I think I'll have to try to fish the lip up and out. This could take awhile...

OK corrected the seal lip placement with a plastic trim tool and some silicone spray. So how do you know if the window is seated completely? Do you just assume it is OK if the seal is over the flange of the window frame? Is there any other signs it is seated vs. loose?

Isn't that seal a PITA, I had a similar problem, had to go searching through all sorts of threads to see how it should look. I also had a similar problem in the top corners, bottom corners were okay, but I was worried about the seal not being good, and after all of the trouble of fixing the rust in the old parcel shelf and the rear seat wells I was loathe to start pouring water on it again to see if it was actually sealed, lol.

Here are some photos of my rear window being done. As you can see the body is in pretty good shape!
The close up of one of the corners is tight and fits well. The last photo shows the glass back in... I did this last year and the corners have not moved at all. My Pcar is driven quite a bit and mostly around town. It was mentioned about OE and aftermarket - I installed an OE unit from our host. I have no idea about the aftermarket unit. I took my time and real massaged the corners into place - you can really see it inside - sorry no photos! The only problem I had was the defroster - the wires litterly desintegrated behind the roof liner so i have no defroster. The glass was in real good shape. The front one was replaced as it had a few bullet holes... Also, I bought new trim for inside the rubber. It was expensive but the original one was really tarnished... ![]() ![]() ![]()

Srry for hijacking this thread, but is there a way to spot the top and bottom
side of the seal, because I'm ready to install my rear window as well, and the seal looks square and not slightly trapezoid like the window itself... ![]() |

OK let me try this again... I have the seal now oriented correctly so the window is installed and the exterior seal appears even all the way around. On the interior the seal lip is over the flange of the window opening. So my question is: How do I know if the glass is seated? Is there a way to tell for certain? I don't want to find out later when my rear glass falls out on my first drive on the freeway with the windows down...

Rear window seal???
I hope this isn't considered hyjacking.
Just came across this post and now after reading and looking at the photos I see that I have another problem that I was unaware of until now. I have no metal seal in that groove just a nice soft flexible rubber seal, compliments of some earlier PO. Possibly this year model did not have one? So, My car is a 1988 Carrera coupe. does anyone out there have an extra one? or where can I get one. I have seen 100+ with windows down and still have the rear window, lucky I guess. Thanks in advance. Don |

I have read elsewhere on the forum that some owners do not like the strip in the rubber. They have used a thick wire to fill in so they lose the chrome look as well a smoother look to finish it off. The metel strip is not cheap - our host does not stock it anymore as it is very difficult to ship - I went to my local Porsche dealer - Pfaff - and special ordered it. It was expensive but in the end worth it.
