It's pretty cool to see that this thread actually influenced you to sign up to Pelican.

Welcome & glad to have you & your shared knowledge here.

Its unfortunate for some that they will never accept the fact that Porsche & VW are family forever. Hell, even the the latest Porsche Panamera body shell is currently made in the VW plant in Hanover.

For years & years I too have been a lurker like you in addition to a hardcore Porsche & VW guy. I collect my cars & parts and pretty much keep very quiet on the forums and let all the others do the talking. There are many, many more of us on here that maintain a stealth presence and just sit back, watch & listen even when we have strong opinions or know the answers.

Its hard to comment unless you've actually experienced a fast Porsche 911 powered, big motor or turbo Type 2 Bus. Blowing away modern cars in a updated vintage public adoring VW Bus is mind boggling to those in your rear view mirror. Total sleeper, totally unexpected. After is all said and done, you can take your Bus loaded with gear to Yosemite and set up the tent for a weekend of camping & fishing. Return home and pack the dogs in for a trip to the beach and then to HomeDepot for 2x4's & concrete. I've never been able to do that in my 911, 356, Bug, Notchback,etc...there is just something about Buses.

TH2RS

"Having a Porsche 911 prepared engine Volkswagen Transporter TH2RS is a very fast car, even faster than a BMW M3! In fact this model is not only a powerful utility car, is a utility car that can beat even some supercars, see for example the Audi R8. The secret lies under the hood, where it was mounted a Porsche 911 Turbo engine, which through the intervention of the 9ff has climbed to 800hp.
So those from TH, the people who have turned, literally, the T5, in a Hulk, were presented with their new toy on the circuit at Nardo, with the bold goal of reaching 300 km/h. They were surprised that the maximum speed shown on the GPS is even more impressive, actually appearing 310.7 km/h.
Unbelievable for a model that was designed for something else and to whom you give more opportunities to disintegrate or to overturn at that astonishing speed. Another advantage is represented by the special suspension which becomes stronger as the speed increases, improving the stability. Also, this model comes with a set of Brembo brakes for endurance. All the car occupants will be well “immobilized” in the Recaro seats."

My winter driver is an 82 Westfalia, I call it the Vanagulf (due to the paint livery)

The Type IV motor that was in the Vanagon, and some of the late busses was developed by Porsche / VW for use in the 914, so some can argue the a Type IV motor is a Porsche motor. It is actually a interesting motor, and some have increased displacement as high as 3.0L and they put out a lot of power.

I recently rebuilt my Type IV, and used the performance cam, solid lifters and valve train kit from the 914. I also found a supplier who provided new heads that were machined to accept larger valves and were ported and flowed. I kept the original fuel injection, but I recently learned that it is pretty easy to upgrade to the fuel injections system used in the 914, and that this will also provide a bit more performance.

I retained the original 94mm pistons (providing 1997cc displacement), but I really wish I had upgraded to a 96mm (2157cc displacement, same as water boxers). I was told that the engine runs too hot with a 96mm piston, so you have the danger of dropping a valve. However, I also upgraded to a larger oil pump and an external oil cooler, and find that I run consistently at around 200 degrees (according to the cyl. head temp. sensor I installed), so I am wishing I had gone with the 96mm piston, but who knows.

I am running stock heat exchangers, but a bug pack quiet pack exhaust which also runs a bit cooler than the stock muffler.

I love the way it turned out!!! tonnes of torque, sounds great, and is a real pleasure to drive.

No way near the HP that a flat 6 would add, but this is a daily driver that I also take into the bush quite regularily, so I wanted something that I could take on a long trip and not have to worry about getting stranded in BF nowhere and trying to find parts, etc. So far it has been very reliable.

Let me know if you want more info...http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1265651015.jpg

Antonio saw my post on another thread and asked that I post it here as well...

Hope you enjoy:

From 88-93 I worked at St. Charles Foreign Car in St. Charles, MO. Back then, we had a customer that would vacation with his family in the 1972 bus he bought brand new, and only used for vacations. Over the years, the guys at the shop had done everything they could to the original motor to eek out every HP they could, making those trips through the Rockies as painless as possible.

Upon returning from a trip after the latest set of performance mods, and still being disappointed, someone mused "why not put a 911 motor in it!" Laughs were quickly replaced with "would it work?"

As I recall, it ended up being a totally rebuilt CIS engine, tranny was sent to someone in CA for a performance rebuild, custom bellhousing and just about everything else was stock. Wider tires, different shocks...the only thing you could see on the outside was the rear bumper was moved back about 1" to accomodate the 911 muffler, the tailpipe was a single output on the left instead of the standard beetle style, and a small black louver was installed below the bumper to conceal the big muffler.

It was a trip to drive, and would smoke Camaros and the like off the line...which made people really scratch their heads.

Pretty sure it was done in 88 or 89.

Here are a couple of old scans that I have...apologies for the poor quality.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1269983766.jpg

"unsafe at any speed"

RWebb 04-20-2011 11:30 AM

the best idea for any old bus will be to transplant an electric drive unit into one; or to do it sooner, maybe a hybrid drive unit

the Splitties are really low speed vehicles, due to the brakes and suspension setups - an electric motor would give you real nice torque for that use

a Bay is (or can be made) somewhat safe up to maybe 75 mph; while the Vanagons are ok at 85

if you want to have a Splittie for high speed use, you should probably take care of the front end crashability, suspension and brakes... in other words, cut the unit body off and put it on an entirely new platform with some additional work for that front end crash... no small task
