clutch release lever question

My last step before engine removal (replacing Clutch... Have all books and manuals) is to pry the clutch release lever forward to release spring tension(ive done that) then remove release lever from clutch cross shaft. Is this the lever I have to pull off in my hand in the picture? It does not want to slide down off the shaft and I dont want to force it unless I am sure. Any input is appreciated. thanks Doug

Yes that is right. It is "supposed" to rotate freely and should slide easily down the shaft. Use all the usual techniques if it is stuck. I have had them fall right to the floor as soon as the tension and circlip is removed. I've also had them be a ***** to get off. Good luck.

The trans will separate like you have it but you have to resolve its ability to pivot because if it is frozen on the shaft its not operating correctly making you feel like you have the heaviest clutch.
I use an air chisel with the point, pull down on the arm as I vibrate the verticle shaft.
I like to clean the surfaces with scotch brite and antiseize before closing up.
Your clutch might not even be bad..

If the lever does not come off the shaft, check and see if there is a roll pin that goes through the lever and shaft. Some years had that, I forget which year it applies to.

The shaft is supposed to slide off. Corrosion can lock it on tight. I couldn't get it loose while it was in the car. To get the arm off my '86 transmission, I separated the engine and transmission, removed the roll pin fron the clutch release fork up top and slid the shaft out of the housing. I was able to separate the arm and shaft with penetrating oil and hitting the shaft with a block of wood and hammer.

With pin 18 removed it should slide out of the housing.
Clean and grease the shaft and arm when you reassemble.

Got it out . A little tapping , lubricant ect, it was rust on the shaft. The seal was disintegrated on the top. It was easier knowing that it was made to come off. thanks gents.

My '78 has the roll pin on that lever. If your's has one, no way that lever is coming off until you tap out the pin.

Good. I was going to suggest to spray some Penetrating oil on the top area to soak it for a while. Replace the broken seal. When re-assembling, oil the inside and make sure the lever moves easily on the cross-shaft
Clean the C-spring real well and then oil it because when activating the clutch, the leaves in helper-spring interact (slide) within. Dad a little grease on the pin where it sits in the C-spring.

If the cable is really old, consider replacing it. If you keep the old cable, spray some Silicon into the rubber sleeve to get a better slide.
