1.26 1968 door pocket repair

Thanks Freddie. I used your how to to buff the car links so you have had a hand in it so to speak.

I was on the way home and decided to stop by Hobby Lobby and see if they had some Porsche Factory Elastic to try and repair the door pockets. One of the pockets had the elastic cut off completely and the other was stretched to the max. Hobby Lobby must have taken the Porsche emblem off the package as they had the exact size but it was only $1.26 and Porsche would certainly get 25.00 for it.
Thinking I had about an hour before I had to do stuff I jumped in.
The old elastic runs through the pocket on the outside of the cardboard in the pocket, so I had to make a snake of sorts. I tried tying on to the old elastic but it broke while pulling. I looked in my organized garage and remembered I just got some tires last week and decided to use the strap they came with. It worked like a charm. I tied the new elastic to it and pulled it back through. I do not have the rivet or a tool that could fasten the old style rivet so I cut out the old elastic off the riviet and punched a tiny hole in the new elastic and worked it back onto the old rivet. I pulled the elastic as tight as possible and mounted both sides. It was actually tight enough that I did not even have to mount one side to the door panel. Mounted the old screws and bam a snap back door pocket.
Annoying looking door pocket repaired for $1.26.

Out with the Jensen. Funny thing the original owner paid extra to have the radio when he bought the car (it is on the window sticker) and in 71 he had another one put in, assume the Jensen I took out. I guess tape players were the rage then.
Thanks to mpwrcpe (Dave) for selling the radio, Fedex man drove up while I was working on the car and I put it in (cleaned it a little) before he was out of the neighborhood.

nice car!

you can get repros now for the cracked rubber knob surrounds - that thread was active a couple days ago

t6dpilot 01-23-2010 12:14 PM

Nice car and great DIY ideas. For the new repro rubber knobs, the Pelican person who is doing that is Midlife. The knobs are great and fit perfectly. Have a set in stalled on my hotrod. Good luck with the project.

w21055 01-23-2010 02:56 PM

Thanks for the heads up will contact him for the knobs. I am trying to just get it safe for some daily driving and maybe in the winter next year it will transform into a R clone.
AS A BONUS I got the radio to work!!
Ran out of dry time for pictures as the weather in GA sucks on the weekends. But I took my drivers mirror apart and took the glass to a glass shop and had them cut me a replacement. Here you can see it apart with the new glass. I glued it up and it is on the car will post pic tomorrow.

Days old :^) I got an order from pelican with new rotors and other neglected parts. Brakes were the first order of business.

Nice re-find Phillip! Always impressed with your work. FYI, the car has a 69 one-year-only three bar decklid grill. has some value even though it's a little wavy.

did you ask me about the smaller correct driver's door mirror?

Thanks Shaun,
I did but I had the mirror glass cut for me. Is the 5 inch round one
(I think that is the size on this one) not correct for the 68?

On the Grille, the Original Owner had some work done in 1970 and possibly had the grille replaced. The car wears mostly its original paint but I think he had the holes welded up and painted in 1970 as there is a reciept for the work.
That is interesting, I was going to pull it and straighten it out as it is very slight with the wave the pics show it more.
Phillip

Played with the ride height, you might can see the new parts behind the refinished wheels. I also hit the car with the buffer again as I did some research and had the machine set up too fast and that was why I was not getting as good of a finish.

Today, was waiting to show the finish on the wheels as I know they will not be a crowd favorite.

I'll have to check, but I think the 65-68 is an ~4.5 inch mirror, no frame surround. the one you have is correct for 69-71 and then of course the mini-flag for 72+.

I dug my car out today, hoping to get it out of the garage tomorrow, will send a pic of the mirror. being a little smaller, it goes better with the narrow arches. I like it, but looks too small on my 73 having a little more curves, the car is a mish-mash of 69-73 styling cues, favoring 69. Those big black bumperettes had to come off immediately.

On the grill, below is the correct style for your car. Very nice ones go for as low as $100 now and again, always surprised that good examples typically sell for less than 70-71 5 bar grills. To gauge value on yours, I recently sold a 90% grill (needed minor straightening and time on a wheel) for $250 and a 50% grill (core that needed complete disassembly, straightening...) for $100. A year or two ago when the market was still running, excellent 69 grills went for up to $500 due to their rarity. Ahhhh, bubbles.

Wheels get my vote, look good!.....are they on 195/60's?

w21055 01-24-2010 05:02 AM

Yep, that was why I asking so many questions about your red car.

ruby911 01-24-2010 05:27 AM

+1 on the wheels Phil - I like 'em.

jass 01-24-2010 09:01 AM

I am curious how you did your mirror?? Any tips on how you extracted the old glass out and then re-installed the new glass? I need to do that to my mirror but it didn't seem like that plastic ring surrounding glass was removable without damaging.
Your car looks great - nice work!

w21055 01-24-2010 09:17 AM

The plastic ring will come out with some persuasion. I took a small 90 degree pick and worked it against the ring and the outside mirror housing. Once it starts to lift I ran the pick under the ring around the mirror and it released. I then took the pick tool and ran it around the mirror cutting the silicon that was holding it to the mirror base. The glass shop said they could have made one even if I broke the glass.

Shaun @ Tru6 01-24-2010 10:47 AM

here is the proper 65-68 Phillip. Mine is a nice driver. Mirror is nice, has a gravel ding in the back.
