Tuned the car over the past couple of days and it runs MUCH better. Just about ready to try my 95 mile commute in it.
Got some Thru the grille type lights and went ahead and came up with a bracket to mount them. Since they are not the real deal and my grilles are not dead I wanted to mount them without drilling any holes or cutting anything. I went to Lowes and was going to buy some aluminum and make a bracket and then I saw this "T" type door hardware and thought it would work with 2 bends. I then took some stock Aluminum I had and made a bottom plate to make a sandwich mount of sorts. I think it turned out pretty good for 6.79 and an hour. I took some quick shots but will get in there and knock of that surface rust in the fenders when I take the bumpers off to touch them up. I may have to lower them a little, so I may have to spend 3.00 bucks for the brackets to do again but I am pleased that it can be done. I have more lighting options coming at the end of the week. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1264557697.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1264557714.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1264557728.jpg |
Cool stuff. That looks like a fun project. I had a '68 912 as a daily driver for a couple of years.
Coincidentally... Those little hardware store brackets are very handy. I used four of them last weekend to make latches for some lift ramps I made. I needed to make the ends of the ramps removable so the oil catch pan would fit under the sump when the car's on the lift. One of those brackets is also holding the fuel junction block/pressure meter on my car. http://granitehead.smugmug.com/Cars/...81_6mxPk-S.jpg |
Thanks for the heads up on the Switches. I bought a couple sets because on my Backdated car I bought old switches but never put them in because they were so cracked up. Midlife's replacements worked great. Next thing will be taking the bumpers off and touching up some surface rust and then drive it for a while. I have some Valve cover gaskets from Skirmants coming and if that does not stop a leak I have now the engine will have to come out.

I put the car into some daily driving chores this past week and it has performed very well. I had to fix the heat, broken cable that took 3 hours due to the cable coating getting stuck in the tubes.
On the carpet I could not get the shaving method to work out as the shaver kept cutting out so I went to the Hobby Lobby and found some Tan fabric dye that is pretty much a perfect match. You have to boil water, add the dye and let the carpet sit in a big tub for an hour. Turned out pretty good. There was some surface rust on the lower fenders and bumper so I had some painted mixed and touched those parts up so it is not so noticeable. Also ordered some H4's to replace the sugar scoops(the ones in the picture are an older set) Still getting used to cold starting it, you can ask those at the cars and coffee this weekend. At any rate since it is not pouring oil out of it anymore and runs pretty well it will stay at the stage for a while. BTW Skirmants valve cover gaskets rock. ...has anyone ever heard a car backfire so loud it pulled a muscle? Phil has.... ...all kidding aside, it is a really cool little car in good hands |
mirror and rear grille originality
Phillip-
Someone has given you bogus advice on the door mirror and engine lid grille. They are both absolutely stock for the 1968 911. Many features of the 68 911 were unique to that year - dash, fender reflectors, mirrors both inside and out, vinyl door panels, etc. I have a stock original 68 911 (original owner). If I can help clarify any issues w photos, etc. feel free to pm me. |

But I have a 68 911 Normal and I have run across several items that I question as to whether they are original or not. I would like to be able to use you as reference when I am unsure about certain itmes on the car as I go thru it. |

I do have an update on the car. I have driven it a good bit (about 2k miles)and drove it to the 356 Swap meet last Saturday. When I got home I noticed it had leaked more oil than normal on the drivers side. So I got under it to see if something was wrong, WELL THERE WAS except it was gas coming down cleaning the oil off the case making it look like oil. The drivers side carb diaphram must have blown on the way home. I can live with a few drops of oil but not gas as I don't need a fire in the garage. The carbs should have been gone through really before driving it, but since it seemed to run fine I did not bother with them. I got a rebuild kit (They are webers) and rebuilt them last night. I bolted them back up this morning and it cranks up super nice (on a half turn of the key!) and idles pretty smooth. The carbs were nearly purple inside from old gas and age. So far no leaks so I may put it into daily driving rotation as the carbs had me nervous from the get go. Phillip |

I found one of my oil leaks and fixed it this weekend. I have it down to a drop on the floor versus a pint :^) now. The gasket that goes below the generator stand had started leaking pretty bad and one corner was gone when I pulled it apart. I don't think I have any before pics of the engine and wished I did as the engine bay was NASTY. Here are a couple of pics. Although it is not all shiney new, you don't get filthy touching things in the compartment now. I also shot under the engine after about a 40 mile trip, usually it would be soaked.
