Porsche visits in San Diego, CA

I was going to and probably should post this in the OT area, but, I wanted to get PORSCHE must places to visit on a potential trip I may have to make to San Diego, CA in February...I am sure I will miss some beautiful scenic CA places, but, the priority is with the 1-1.5 days I will have, to get as much inspiration & info for a "R" creation I am begining!!! :-)
I will only have 1-1.5 days to hit these places so I don't think a drive of 5 hrs to 1 place is in the options, unless, it is REALLY, REALLY, I MEAN REALLY, the true meca to see and/or talk about "R" specs...

Places I am thinking of:
1. Pelican in El Segundo... how far is this from down town San Diego...?
2. Supertec & CPR
3. TRE
4. Autobahn Interiors
5. Callas Motorsports
6. Aasse Brothers
7. Jerry Woods

I am sure I am missing many others and I appreciate help identifying the key places to see and get "R" creation info... My guess is Dave @ TRE is at the top of my list...

Whats up with CA highway travel wows/time we all hear about... I;ll need to factor that in here too...

Thanks!
Bob

Pelican's El Segundo is about 100 to 110 miles from San Diego, Autobahn is maybe 10 miles, the rest range from 50 miles (supertec) to 500 miles (Jerry Woods). Try not to cross any southern california county during rush hour traffic. That will double or triple travel times.

If you are going soon, Porsche is the marque at the San Diego auto museum in Balboa park. No idea if any R style cars are in their display.

I'd plan to look at Cars N Coffee which happens every Saturday in Irvine (75 miles from downtown san diego) and see when Porsche is next the featured marque. Some interesting things will come out of the woodwork. You might also look at the OCR and SDR and LAR of PCA and figure out when they are doing stuff.

In June, Orange County is doing a PCA event to feature past cars in Excellence magazine. Some R-style cars may be there, but that's a long ways off.

Lots to schedule here... I did see the Balboa Pk event but if my plans materialize, it will be in Feb that I am out your way...
TRE has done several nice cars which have been featured here on Pelican...how far are they away??
Great... I can visit Supertec, CPR, Pelican, Autobahn.
I will check out the regions you listed to see whats up with them in Feb...
Any other input here guys...??

TRE is 150 miles away from SD, across San Diego, Orange and LA counties. Plan the trip accordingly. Leave at 4a and it is 2 hours. Leave at 6:30a and it might be 4.5 to 6.

If you are in downtown san diego i would think twice about heading up to northern la.

Thats a real haul. You could spend your entire day and a half on the freeway.

In San Diego I would go to autobahn and to the porsche restoration shop in Fallbrook. They always have some amazing stuff going on. Check the site out. They will have stuff in all states of restoration.

I did the same thing over the new years holiday

I went to Autobahn Interiors; Tony was a great host and showed me all around the shop with my Father-in-law. I would also consider European Collectibles because they have a R replica in stock. It is a nice car with lots of cool R stuff on it. Not to bad of a drive from SD to Costa Mesa. I would have gone to Cal Restoration in Fallbrook, but I ran out of time. Have fun.

Doug... if i venture to TRE and leave at 4AM to get there and sit in the parking lot till when ever Dave arrives...spend 1-2 hrs there...how long will the ride be back to SD...is the traffic only entering the ares where TRE is or is it both ways...?

CLab...I plan on visiting Henry @ Supertec & the guys @ CPR... thx for reaffirming a good stop...

TChad...I will look up where European Collectibles is and arrange a stop there & confirm they have the "R" replica you mention so I can get a first hand looksie...

Any other places to try and hit...maybe I will need to extend the time in SoCal... :-)

I've only been to Supertec once to buy a set of head-studs, it looks like the California Porsche Restoration shop is about 2 miles from Henry so easy enough to visit both.

The porsche exhibit at the SD auto museum runs until the end of Jan, it's been going on for about 4 months, most of the cars on display are owned by local PCA members, I was lucky enough to be invited, here are some pics.

+1 on the Auto Museum, many local members cars are on display, it is a nice lunch time walk from my office at the Zoo, the rest of Balboa Park is very nice also. Symbolic Motors in La Jolla always has something nice on display. If you're in town on Sat the 13th, the local region is having an Autox down at Qualcomm Stadium, stop by and say Hi!

+1 on Kundensport in Thousand Oaks.

Also, TLG Automotive is only a short drive from Dave at TRE. Tony and Marco do some cool projects, too. TLG Auto Porsche Service in North Hollywood, CA

Visit Black Forest

Black Forest in Kearney Mesa is a great place to visit for ideas. They did a fantastic job dropping an '87 3.2 into my '77 Targa. They work on all years and are full of great ideas - and just 7 miles from downtown San Diego

Hi Bob,

the PCASDR autox is at Qualcomm Stadium (easy 10 minute drive from downtown) on Sat Feb 13th, come on down, we'll buy you a beer after the event. La Jolla is only 15 minutes from downtown, and there is a lot of shopping, sight seeing etc. for the wife. Symbolic always has some very nice new and vintage cars for sale.

Please give us a call before you stop by so we can make sure to have someone around to give you a tour.

Depending on the time of day, we're about an hour from downtown San Diego, especially if you hop on the I15.

It's a great compliment to be on a list of Porsche "must-visits."

Chris/chocolatelab, thanks for the kind words!

Steve's Independent Porsche in Orange County is a good place to check out for what an independent does.
