G50 Conversion ???

Ok peoples, after much deliberation I have decided to go with the G50 conversion for the Beast. There are a couple of issues to iron out and I want to get input from the group. I have searched the archives and learned some stuff but can’t find any details on the following:

1) axles: From what I have been able to learn so far, I will need to change out my axles because of the different size/pattern of the G50s compared to my SC suspension. Supposedly there is a particular year(s) of axles that have the larger style flanges that I need to install. Does anyone know what these years are? Am I going to have to replace the axle stub part that is in the banana arm? I rebuilt my rear suspension when building my project and don't have very many fond memories of doing so but if it has to be...o-well. Please don’t respond with “call patrick motorsports” because I have. They are more than willing to sell me axles for $500 but not so forth coming as to which year I am actually purchasing. If I can determine what year I might be able to get them from someplace else…aka Pelican.

2) clutch pedal: There appear to be a couple of options here. A- I know I can install a later year pedal cluster that uses the hydraulic clutch but isn’t there an issue with them being power assisted brakes or something which makes this a littler harder than a simple bolt in? B- Install a different pedal cluster with master cylinders from Tilton, Wilwood, CNC, etc. Yes I know these parts won’t say Porsche on them but I’m sure you realize by now that hasn’t stopped me yet. If “A” is going to require some fabrication then I might consider this option?. C- Install a single additional master cylinder onto my existing clutch pedal assembly to run the clutch slave cylinder. Basically, I would disconnect the cable from the current clutch pedal and connect it to a master cylinder by fabricating a bracket. Because of the limited space involved, minimal cost and the fact that I won’t have to screw with the current braking and throttle systems this might be a good way to go?

Any ideas or other tidbits are very welcomed!

I hear without the Correct pedal set up its a baer to push, try contacting Patrick Motorsports or www.patrickmotorsports.com. they seem to have everthing you need to convert it along with the knowledge to do so, hey did you put a late turbo suspesion in the front of your car. I did a sc to c2 turbo (speedyellow of course) and want to put the late suspension on it, I am gonna do a post on it, Kevin

Cool

No experience with install. It is on back burner for my 77. I do know that there are different models of G-50. Dr.Timmins has some interesting info on G-50 at www.instant-g.com. I wonder what model Pat.Mot. sells.

This is a total wild guess, but here goes: Since 1987 was the first year the G50 was offered, '87 half shafts should work, but then I guess that depends on the vintage of the G50 you're getting. Mine is an '87 and does not have power-assisted brakes. Although my clutch is hydraulic, the pedal cluster is getting stiff and I look forward to a rebuild.

My G50 is a 87 so maybe the half shafts from an 87 would work fine. I guess the question is whether they will fit into my SC rear arms?

Did you remove your brake booster for some reason?
(911's have had power assisted brakes since at least 1978.)

the axles on the 87/88 Carrera have a bolt hole spacing of 108mm, earlier cars had 100mm, even earlier cars had 108mm, so you need to look and match them up.

I recently looked into converting to a G50 o my race car, and decided not to, I would have needed to cut away my torson tube center and thus go to coil overs, the pedal assembly is sufficiently different that to get the hydraulic clutch you need to intall the later pedals, which possibly means cutting out the foot box and welding in a laterstyle one. Plus you will need to go to the power assisted brakes.

I did not see what year you car is, and I don't own any SCs so I can't say for sure you will need to to all this, but if you master cylinder is under the car, chances are you will need to.

One final bit that pushed me over thedge to go with a 915 and 930 Limited slip, was the 915 can have the gears changed and serviced much less expensively, since the gears are not separate from the shafts (forgive me I am not a trani man and don't know the correct terms) where as the G50 has everything in on unit, not separable (or so I am told)

So the 915 is in my car. I added Smart Racings apex couple and 915 Robotek Shifter Kit, and it shifts pretty nicely, not quite my G50, but not bad. I am also running solid mounts wihch helps the shifting a bit.

Jim
