Turning over stripped engine?

I am about to reseal the engine, inspect and adjust the valves. Whats the safest way to turn the engine over once the plugs are out? Its probably obvious but just want to make sure. thanks Doug

Crankshaft pulley bolt using a 1/2 inch bar and socket. The engine looks to be very clean why a reseal? How many miles?

I'm reading this that you want to turn the engine over to access the bottom of the engine. The best way is to mount the engine to a stand. They are available from Harbor Freight for less than you would think. If you are just doing a reseal you can use a universal mount and make it work. This allows you to not only "turn it over" but turn it on its side. etc.

I read to only turn the engine clockwise to keep the chains from skipping? You can use the pulley bolt. Mine was on so tight when I resealed that I gave up and left the pulley on!
There is no way the bolt will do any damage.
ps looking at the replies makes me question if you are turning the crank or if you want to flip the engine over...

I also read this as turning the engine upside down. If that's the intent, mount the engine on a stand as Kevin suggested. Now would be a good time to invest in one.

I have just cleaned the engine to ensure no grit gets into it as I take all of the parts and gaskets off for a reseal. I was wondering how to turn the engine over to adjust the valves and get it to TDC. (Which I dont see very many markings on the black pulley but I havent searched hard yet.)

I have the yoke attached and torqued to 36 lbs on the two nuts. It doesnt look like a lot of contact surface for the engine but I guess its been well tested.

I am contemplating the shift to the stand and figure I need to rent an engine hoist,it feels heavy. thanks for your suggestions Doug

There are three little grooves in the pulley all 120 degrees apart. I usually put a dab of whiteout on each to aid in visibility. Yes, as stated before turn the engine over with a 1/2 " breaker bar and 17 mm socket. For pulley removal- Remove the bolt and pry ever so lightly on each side back and forth and it should come right off.

Typically you use a flywheel lock - but with the socket and breaker bar on the bolt at the 9 o'clock position, a good whack or three with a hammer on the bar should break the bolt loose (if the plugs are in)

You'll need to lock the flywheel when you tighten the bolt to spec....

For a cheap flywheel lock just use a boxend wrench from a flywheel bolt to a bellhousing bolt.

Doug,

If you get 2-3 buddies you can lift it on the stand without a hoist. I would put the stand on the yoke, so it hangs sideways. Then have your crew lift the engine until the stand dangles straight underneath - lower it - done.

If you have decent rafters a chain hoist is the cheapest way to hoist. Engine hoists that are on rolls are about $200 and not easy to move / stow away.

I agree with two strong people just lifting it up on the plywood and putting it in the stand. But have someone holding the stand so it doesn't roll backwards while you do it. Ask me how I know!
