Need Help Please: 78 Euro SC Oil Temp gauge connection
Hoping to get some help. I have been searching the site for a couple of days about connection for the Oil Temp Gauge and found some pictures, diagrams, and info but its been on M/Y earlier or newer than my 78 SC so I still don't have the info I need.
The background is I have a Euro 78 SC with a 3.6L conversion in it. All the gauges were/are working fine, but I was taking each gauge out to put the LEDs in that I bought from ETARGA and I noticed that there was a greenish/yellow with a blk stripe wire with a .250 female spade receptical just dangling behind the gauge. I also noticed that there was a .250 male spade at the 12 o'clock position of the Oil Temp gauge that was unconnected (adjacent plastic marked with ground symbol). I should also mention that at the very top of the gauge, there is an empty bulb socket with tape over it. I have read on this forum that most model 911s did not use that bulb socket, but since this is a Euro version, I though maybe the disconnected greenish/yellow wire may have originally connected to the missing bulb. I was thinking about simply connecting the loose greenish/yellow wire to the male spade connector, but then I remembered reading that brown is color of the ground wires for Porsches and the male spade connector is marked with a ground symbol so I stopped and decided to search the forums. So now I am a bit stuck. Does anyone have a picture or diagram of the connections for a 78 SC Oil Temp gauge? If you have picture or diagram of a Euro 78, even better. By the way, I am going to instal an inline fuse on #58L terminal so I don't cook anything in the future. Couple of pictures attached to clarify. Thanks in advance ![]()

Guys, a little help please. Does anyone have a 78, 79 or even 80 SC out there that can check the back of their oil temp gauge and let me know what, if anything is plugged into the top terminal of the oil gauge.
Yes I know it is marked with a ground symbol but there are no other ground wires back there to connect to the unconnected spade, only that greenish yellow wire. Thanks in advance. |

The disconnected green/black stripe wire should go where the black wire with the crimped connector in your picture is installed. Perhaps a new wire was run with the engine swap.
Nothing is mounted to the stud marked with the ground symbol on my car.

BTW, the green with black stripe wire is the one normally run to the sender. Through the chassis and then through the 14 pin connector to the gauge.

Ok, thanks guys. I am going to shrink tube the loose connector so it doesn't touch anything a leave it unconnected. From your input it looks like its not supposed to be connected as in Bristow's picture and from Timmy2's input it does look like a new sender wire was run because of the engine swap.
Thanks again. I just put in the inline fuse to the head lamp switch and tested it so I also feel better that, I won't fry the circuits behind the dash. Gerald |
