Gas Analyzer
Does anyone have a source for an inexpensive gas analyzer? Looking to purchase new or used. Any feedback on what NOT to buy.

Gunstons are good....or you can go to a smog shop and see if they have an older superceeded one laying around....
Gunstons are small and made for home use while the commercial ones are huge.

The Gunson is fine for checking idle CO; not designed for road testing.

Gunstons only do one or two gases while the commercial ones have all the bells and whistles. Commercial one detect NOx, CO and HC. I believe it also has calibration gases so that they are more accurate.
They get superceeded due to communication, software, printers, fraud detection, VIN readers and other issues with the State smog agencies. I picked one up for $50 but that was a deal. They also test beyond idle speed as mentioned above. Depending on your engine MY, one or two gas tester would be fine....you set one and IF the O2 sensor, cat pipe and everything else is functioning, it's assumed everything else will as well.

I have three, well five if you consider the box of broken LM'1's I have.
1. Gunsons, accurate to about .5% +/- which is more than enough for setting up an older 911. Reliable piece and very easy to use 2. SUN DGA 1000 which is a roll around digital system (takes up a lot of floor space but it's nice) also not very easy to use for the average person. These go for about $600 used on places like cragislist 3. (my favorite) A Heathkit CL-1080 which is every bit as accurate as the expensive SUN machine I have and very fun to use. These come up on ebay for about $50 from time to time. ![]() The only one I would suggest you stay away from is Innovate. Their longevity is terrible and their customer service is terrible. (if you google innovate + customer service you can see this as well)
