Shifting from 3rd to 4th issues
I recently bought an 87 Carrera and have had some shifting issues since. The main issue is that when trying to shift from 3rd to 4th gear at mid-range rpm's, it simply will not let me into 4th. If I'm putting along it shifts into 4th just fine. I've found that if I let the clutch out while in neutral between 3rd and 4th, it will easily slide into gear; but when I do this, as I let the clutch out (shifter in neutral) it rev's the car up a little like when you down shift, only not as much revving. It also downshifts from 5th to 4th just fine.
After reading some posts I decided to change the tranny fluid last night. I bought Mobil Delvac 75w-90, as recommended by my people. I filled it up with a little over 3 quarts, and it doesn't seem to have solved anything. The old fluid came out very clean. Another weird transmission issue I had (which may be related), was last week I started the car in neutral with the clutch in. When I went to let the clutch out, it sort of pulled the car forward as if I was in gear. It didn't stop doing this until I put it in reverse and backed out of my spot. Not sure if this is the same issue, but I haven't had that happen since. Any help is appreciated. |
Could be many things but, I would check you clutch adjustment and adjust your shift linkage and check to make sure your shift linkage parts and tight. Use the search function on the right side of the tool bar to help you find other posts. You should should buy a service manual.

Check the simple things first. |
I was under the impression that the hydraulic clutch didn't have any adjustment??
I will have to check the linkage adjustment/parts this weekend. |
I did not realize the 87 s had a hydraulic clutch, sorry for the misinformation.
I don't know if there is an adjustment for the slave. |
The "simple"rule still applies.
Sometimes, the G50 needs to be bled. Again,a shop manual would be useful. Here is alink some specific info on the G50.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/143268-g50-shift.html Also, you may want to consider including the year of your car in your signature as well as including a key word in future post titles as to what info you are after. Not dogging you but it does make it helpful to those that wish to help. BTW__Welcome to the circus that is Pelican!!! |
Welcome...
Yes, check the linkages first...Slave clutch cylinder can be flushed/bled..... Doyle |
I have the shift bushing kit on order, but in the mean time as recommended I bled the clutch last night. It turned out to be much more difficult than it should have been (of course).
After spending a good deal of time getting the overflow hose off the fluid reservoir, and rigging up a plug, the bleeder nipple on the slave cylinder wouldn't let any fluid out of it. I kept trying different pressures with my power bleeder and crawling in and out from under the car. After 2 hours of messing with it, I fully unthreaded the bleeder nipple, wiped it off and screwed it back in. After that, it bled great. Ran about a liter of fluid through it and cleaned up the project. The clutch pedal felt firm (like it did before I bled it), and after taking a test run it didn't solve anything. The clutch felt smoother to operate (engage), but still couldn't shift into 4th at higher rpm's (above 3000 or more). The shifter bushing kit should be here today or tomorrow, but does anyone have any other ideas? Also, every once in a while, when the car is in neutral at a stop I simply cannot get it into any gear. I have to play with it a while (clutch in, clutch out, hitting all the different gears) to get it into first, and when it does go, it is very rough... |
If there is no clutch adjustment then it sounds like your clutch disc is sticking to the flywheel or pressure plate. Is there an adjustment on the g50 slave cyl.
|
sounds like a shift bushing issue.

I just took apart the shifter and installed the new shift bushing kit. As ususal, the old bushings looked perfect and the new parts did not solve the problem. The shifter felt a little tighter, and it seemed to have a different feel to the shifting, but it still wouldn't let me into 4th gear at higher rpms...
Any other ideas? |
Oil on the clutch plate, sticking disc on input shaft.

The best way to find/repair the problem is to drop the engine/trans and take a good look at it.
You can guess all day long and get nowhere. I had a late model Z28 with the ZF 6 speed. After a while I could no longer get into 5th from 6th. Going up through the gears was fine. We finally pulled the clutch and found the disc to be worn and the fingers in bad shape. I installed a new clutch and all was well again. I know, I know, they are very different beasts but the concept is the same. Actually, the ZF box and a G50 ARE similar. |

Being a G50 and based on what you've described I'm inclined to think the problem may be inside the gearbox. I hope it turns out to be the bushings or clutch as this is an easy and cheap fix. The thought of opening up a G50 to renew synchros fills me with dread but it may be necessary. Having said that... Has your car had the recommended G50 updates? There was a change made to the clutch release mechanism that is a recommended up grade. Txt from the link below... The Porsche factory has released an update kit for early G50 transmissions (911 Carrera 1987-89). According to Porsche, transmissions that are earlier than G5001-1K-03381 (normal) and G5001-2K-01159 (limited slip differential) should be updated with this kit. Includes all OEM parts. For use in transmissions up through G5001 1K 03381 and G5001 2K 01159. The factory kit requires modification to the cast in order to fit. In addition to the Update Kit, you must also obtain the updated Clutch Release Fork for the G50 Transmission (part number L-116-086-06). Porsche 911 & Carrera Clutch & Flywheel - Page 6 |

You could go to John Walkers Workshop as he posts here under that name and has a great reputation. PM him and ask if he has any idea of what it is or stop by his shop. You have one of the best Porsche shops around there is Seattle.
