I think the pictures say it best... finished on stand in October
|
So where's the chassis?
|
Update
Wow Doug !! That looks awesome. Can't wait to see the chassis when it comes home. I see Fuel injection... what's the plan?? Engine management?? Probably gonna be an easier route than my mechanical set up.
|
Hey Doug.
Nice work! How did the CR come out?? Best Scott |

Never officially measured the CR... just know it will be more than 8.5 and less than 9.0. Hope your E is progressing! |
Update needed...
... but it was a slow year on the project. Main thing that got tackled was recovering the interior bits with smooth black German vinyl:
Dash parts (Dave at TRE helped with the main piece, I did the dash top, and the wifey did the knee guard): http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388459268.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388459452.jpg Door toppers and quarter window trim (Tony at Autobahn did the door tops, wife and I did the quarter toppers): http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388459483.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388459499.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388459530.jpg I can't believe how long it took to get them all DONE, wrapped up, and stashed in the cabinet. It took a village on that one... Next item up was to redo these: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388459746.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388459765.jpg They are all 7x15 .41 wheels. I got all my research done, purchased supplies, started stripping paint, then promptly got distracted by other project(s)! Soon. Going to do something RSR-ish with paint on all surfaces. The chassis is still holding me up. I will share a couple pics from the body shop. Here is how it looked late summer: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388460405.jpg Metal work done, doors fit with happy gaps, front fenders/hood checked out, lots of primer and sanding. It looked awesome. Latest info indicates color has been applied to hood and doors: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388460568.jpg Not sure where things stand with the front and rear bumper fitting, but I can make an educated guess . Hoping 2014 is the year! Enjoy... |
Looking good. Have fun with those 7x15's. I've been working on mine for way too long, total *****. But finally done, sort of, and ready to be anodized.
|
Great to see you posting again Doug. It's easy to get slowed down with our busy lives. The paint looks great so far. I think my Orange car was in the paint shop for over a year! I'm be watching with interest as you get into the reassembly process. Cheers, Greg
|
Just came across your thread Doug. I admire your work and attention to detail. I'm at about the same stage as you with my build. I'm particularly interested in how you are going to finish off the rims-there are so many variations out there.

Here's an original 911R wheel. This was taken before they applied the black electrical tape stripe to the wheel.

Don't over do the wheels.....here's a different option strip the anodise, bead blast and clear anodise with no polishing.. suitably industrial . At least I think so

Wheels...
Going to go with a 100% painted wheel solution as I have nothing to loose and am hoping I end up with something that is easier to take care of in the long run. I will start with the raw wheel (since it is in the worst condition of the 4) and see what I can get. Planning on gray pedal faces and no polished surfaces to tone them down a bit...

Look what came home last weekend...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1406425974.jpg
Miracle of miracles... a painted car in my garage: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1406426010.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1406426027.jpg First job was both ceremonial and practical. Many moons ago the FIRST thing I finished restoring for the car was a set of later stock door handles, so they went on first along with the door stays to keep everything in check: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1406426288.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1406426309.jpg I have started cleaning things up from life at the painter's and pulled all the nice "new" fuel lines I had installed for the carb'ed engine. Need to upgrade the whole set up for higher pressure to run the EFI. At least the pump will still work fine: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1406426671.jpg Kind of a bummer to take out all that nice stuff I worked so hard on, but it is for a good cause. Very glad to be back at it! More to come. |
Sorta back to where I was...
The to-do list focuses on getting the powertrain installed, so I started in the back. I had to touch up the insides of both quarter panels due to work done by the painter. Think scrub, POR-15, seam seal, paint, etc. Been there before... was not too happy to be there again, but it is done.
The engine bay got pretty messed up being (over) exposed at the painter's, so I went back thru and cleaned it up: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1407712931.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1407712949.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1407712966.jpg Ahhh, much better. While I am waiting for fuel system parts, I jumped into the EFI install. Gotta get this in while the access is good: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1407713035.jpg ECU roughed in: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1407713093.jpg After all the time I spent welding closed holes on this chassis, it was tough to drill those 2 pass thrus! Spaghetti in the engine bay: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1407713212.jpg So the fun fact is that adds about 30 wires to the engine bay for the setup I will be running. And that was after removing all the wires from the connectors I didn't need, and there is a power harness to add, and lots more wires on the engine, and and and. But, considering I was a little psych'ed out about it one week ago, I am happy to have it installed and feel like I have my head around the whole idea. I have since labeled everything in the engine bay and on the motor and all wires are present and accounted for. Oh and here is a nice shot of it sitting out in the bright sun a couple weeks ago: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1407713508.jpg Lovin' the color. It will just get better and better as I add more bits to the car.... |
Very inspiring, thanks!
|
I am so jealous of your solid shell, painted.
Feels so far away. Love the colour. |
Man that was a lot of work...
Tough to say whether the electrical work or the fuel lines took longer, but I do know the fuel system was not cheap! All aluminum lines and AN-6 fittings.
The rear end is now ready for the powertrain... everything that can/should be done is buttoned up. The cam sync sensor wiring and injector harness wires have to wait and can be seen in the front left corner of the engine bay. All the other sensor wiring is harnessed and ready to plug in: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1412307607.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1412307624.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1412307637.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1412307651.jpg Once I get front suspension parts back from the powder coater's, I can get the car on all fours and proceed with the nuptials! |
Mmmm, I've missed this! Looks like I'm just arriving at the punchline.
|
What hose are you using from tank to catch can? I can't find one that flexible.

Got the powertrain in about a month ago! Enjoy the pics, you know the drill...

One month into it and still connecting the dots
Mechanicals have gone well save one snag on the front oil cooler stuff. Put that on the back burner and focusing on the top side engine bay electrical. I did so much prior to engine install, have done a bunch more now that the motor is in, and STILL have a bunch to go :(! Don't take this EFI thing lightly if you jump off the bridge... it is a lot of work. Gotta be patient!
Pretty hard to tell by the pictures, but I am down to the cam sync sensor run, shortening the O2 sensor lead, and building the fuel injector harness: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1417405932.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1417405956.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1417405991.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1417406018.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1417406049.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1417406076.jpg The fuel system is finally done (thanks Len) and Mr. Clewett is helping me avoid the land mines. They are two patient guys. Thanks for following along... SmileWavy |
Signs of Life...
It took most of December to get all the engine wiring finished up. Finally, finally time to install the battery and see how things look.
Been here before, but always nice to see lights: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1422938607.jpg But this is new territory: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1422938647.jpg Good news is all the EFI sensors were alive and well! Big hurdle cleared so onto the next. Fuel system checkout. Gas guage/sender still works right: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1422938946.jpg Trying to avert a mess/just in case: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1422938997.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1422939010.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1422939024.jpg I already knew the fuel pump wiring was all correct, so just gotta turn the key and hope for the best ... RESULTS: Only one tiny leak presented itself, but was easily fixed. What a relief! LOTS of custom work required just to see this number register on the gauge: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1422939338.jpg Not too much left on the pre-start to-do list.... |
Fired right up...
It's alive and well! I took a video, but no way to post it, so a blurry fan picture will have to do:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1423113163.jpg No real drama to speak of, which of course is a good thing when you run a new motor for the first time. No leaks to report after the 20 minute run-in. Awesome to see the gauges doing their thing: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1423113380.jpg There will be plenty of EFI tuning to do later, but for now I had to dump the oil. I already can't wait to hear that R muffler again and rev it a little more. All the parts are finally in hand to complete the front oil cooler setup, so that is the next big item on the to-do list... |
As I read this, I am smiling from ear to ear. What a great story. WELL DONE !!!!
|
Awesome on the starting. 👏 Is that fuel line across the motor staying as is?
|
Looking great Doug! It won't be long now before she's roadworthy. I put over 5000kms (3000miles) on my 68 this summer with nary a hiccup. Sooo much fun to drive !!

fuel line

Another option I thought about was to have Len make me a rubber line with 90's on the ends and clamp it to the top of the fan shroud at the 2 studs. Thoughts/concerns? |

ok- looking pretty nice Doug !
regarding the aluminum line: It looks nice, but there is no give going point to point solid tubing. I would prefer to see at least one end with a fuel rated piece of hose between the carb and the line. also if you fasten it to the shroud, let it float in the locating clamps. The constant expansion and contraction, of the solid tube is a recipe for a failure in the future. Full on race cars, that use solid tubing are always being taken apart and inspected, so you can't use those as examples to follow |
Will the hinges clear the filter stacks?

R hinges are external on Doug's car. See pics below of other R's. Besides that if Doug was using stock hinges, those would clear the PMO air cleaners too

Can you believe it... it is finally getting close! You have been along on the ride from almost the beginning and it is much appreciated!!!! |
I like the line - a nice touch. Definitely needs some clamps, and the point on vibration/cracking is valid. As long as it's well supported and not under stress (ie do the ends align perfectly with the fuel rails) I think it would be ok.
Nice job on the car!!! |
Time for some updates…
February turned out to be front oil cooler install month for me. Pretty much all factory SC/Carrera vintage parts except for Chuck’s high clearance lines in the back and some custom bracket work up front. Always “fun” to do this on a car that has never had a front cooler . This install put up more of a fight than usual because of parts availability issues, fitment issues with my chassis, items damaged in shipping, undercoating touch ups, fender painting, blah blah blah. Very glad it was finished and pleased with the results! A lot of us have been to this rodeo before so I’ll just show you the answer (from front to back):

Seems like they were designed to fit there... |
